Clock Weather News: Written iPhone App Review
The days of simple clocks are long gone. From fictional clocks that can force you out of bed to apps that have similar goals in mind, it’s tough to find a well-designed app that tries to serve multiple purposes. Usually these apps focus on one aspect and somewhat neglect the others, which is why perfect balance in multipurpose apps is an absolute must.
Concept and Functionality:
Clock Weather News is yet another app that seeks to give us as much information as possible in one place, preferably when we rise from our nightly slumber. This information is vital, such as what the current weather conditions are, what’s going on in the world around us, and most importantly, how late we are for work. Sporting a sleek and modernized design, the app is truly pleasing to look at, and even more pleasing to use.
At the top of Clock Weather News, you’ll find current weather conditions in your area. Information such as temperature, low temperature, dewpoint, wind speed and direction, and cloud conditions is provided, making it extremely easy to get an idea as to what the day ahead should be like. The clock is just as gorgeous, featuring the classic square flip digit look, you can clearly see what time it is without having to fumble through menus or squint at tiny little numbers.
Lastly, if you’re keen on getting your daily news fix when you first wake up, you have the option to sign into your Google Reader account. Once you’ve granted Clock Weather News access to your account, you can easily swipe back and forth through subscription topics. Tapping on a topic takes you to its webpage, making it easy to finish reading it.
One of the first things I’d like to mention is that the developer has already addressed the issue of Google Reader being discontinued. It’s clearly stated on Clock Weather News’s App Store page that there’s already an update waiting to be released when Google shuts the service down in July. Hopefully the transition will be smooth.
Regarding other app features, I’m pleasantly surprised with how many little details are included in Clock Weather News. For example, you can open Google Reader articles in Safari with the push of a button, which is great for those who are used to using the browser’s Reader function. Also, pulling down on the weather window gives you a clear and precise four day forecast (tomorrow and three days after). Lastly, you can quickly access app settings by swiping your finger to the left, revealing customization options such as time format, weather units, and news preferences.
One of the final things I’d like to mention about Clock Weather News is that an alarm function is only available through the purchase of a $0.99 in-app upgrade. Given the fact that the upgrade also disables ads, this is definitely worth doing if you enjoy using the app. The alarm function allows you to set multi-day alarms, along with saving multiple alarms. Plus you can even wake up to your favorite song.
Clock Weather News is free to download from the App Store. I strongly suggest upgrading to the full version of the app because it unlocks many great features and is definitely worth the price. I’ll say without hesitation that Clock Weather News is by far one of the best apps of its kind, and I can’t recommend it enough!
Clock Weather News is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
