Beat Girl Game: Written iPhone Game Review
It’s not terribly unusual to find apps and games that are based off of something bigger (such as a book or movie). Sometimes they’re great, sometimes not so much. Once in awhile a great one comes along, and it envelopes you in the story to the point where you feel like you’re actually a part of it.
Concept and Gameplay:
Beat Girl Game is based off of the heartwarming story of Heather, a young girl who dreams of becoming a classical pianist but discovers the world of DJing. The game allows you to follow Heather’s journey from her very first gig to DJ stardom.
Learning how to play Beat Girl Game isn’t difficult at all, and those of you who are familiar with popular music games like Guitar Hero and Rockband will pick up on the game almost instantly. The game includes hints for beginner players, along with three difficulty levels. You can choose your difficulty level before playing a gig, meaning you don’t have to stick to one difficulty mode for the entire game.
To play the game, you have to tap each color on the screen as the beat passes through it. There are three colored Beat Blocks to tap: blue, green, and red, and various tricks such as crossfades and scratches. Correctly tapping colors will earn you streaks and multipliers, all of which will help improve your score. Your accuracy influences the Crowd Meter, and if you play poorly, the meter will drain and you’ll be booed offstage.
One of my favorite features Beat Girl Game offers is a great variety of awesome music. Played with headphones, it’s hard to not imagine yourself on stage in front of a roaring crowd. Many music games hit a sour note with excellent sound quality and graphics, but Beat Girl Game isn’t one of them.
Another great feature is Game Center integration. There are ten different achievements you can earn, from streaks and multipliers to successfully completing all levels on a certain difficulty. You can also view the leaderboard for each of the 9 available levels to see how well you’re doing compared to others.
Lastly, Beat Girl Game can be as challenging as you want it to be. The Hard difficulty level lives up to its name and is nothing to laugh at. Casual players will find Easy mode to be relaxing while still being able to enjoy the music. It’s all up to you!
Beat Girl Game can be downloaded from the App Store for $0.99. If you’re looking for a fun DJ game with an awesome and inspiring background story, you can’t afford to skip this game. If you’re interested, you can check out the trailer for the movie on YouTube.
Beat Girl Game is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 5.1 or later. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
