alpha aquilae: Written  iPhone App Review

Reviewed by Philip Chan

alpha aquilae is a unique tower-defense game available for iOS. Stick with me as I review this latest app from developer Alain Kaczmarek, on iTunes, for devices running iOS 4.3 or later.

Features:
So what is this mysterious tower defense app all about? Basicaly game play of alpha aquilae is as follows: You are in charge of a vast, beautiful constellation. Many stars make up this realm, and you must prevent them from being infected with dark cell matter. To do so, you arrange various defenses on the outskirts of the stars under attack, power them up, then let them fly as they circle and spin around the star, popping attacking cells. However, if too many cells approach or there aren’t enough working defenses, you will get overwhelmed. There is an astounding number of stars to defend  and you’ll need to work through the constellation, slowly, as you defeat the enemies. Eventually, gamers will be faced with the brightest star, alpha aquilae, the namesake for this app. You’ll be faced with several map views, and a battle/defense screen of each star. It’s an interesting concept and while its origins aren’t too far removed from more traditional tower defense games, it still sets itself apart as quite unique.

Graphical Layout:
One of the main difficulties with this app is the very basic layout of the app. You load it up and are pretty immediately thrown into the game play field. It can be quite difficult to figure out the app from the start. There, thanks to an update, some hints and guidance in the form of red targets onscreen, but it is minimalist to say the least. However, the actual graphics look quite good and the starry skyscape have a haunting, interesting design that really adds to the app. The developer’s website offers some helpful video and other info that should provide a few clues onto the game play as well.

Value:
To be quite frank, alpha aquilae is not for everyone. It’s a very, very unique tower defense app with an incredibly minimalist approach to game play introduction and tutorial guidance. Oh, and there really isn’t an obvious menu-you get thrown into the defensive role right away. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it makes it a very difficult game to jump right into. I applaud the developer of alpha aquilae for taking the time to create such a unique spin on the tower defense style of game play, and gamers will need to sit down and take the time to figure out this app before passing judgement on it. If they do get past the learning curve, they’ll find a very engaging app, perfect for serious tower defense fans everywhere.

alpha aquilae iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
