The Categories Game Free: Written iPhone Game Review
Quick! Name a capital that starts with “Z”? Oh, how about a famous actor whose name starts with “M”? Think fast!
The Categories Game Free, developed by 55 Venture LLC, truly pushes you to think outside the box. Testing both your memory and your ability to think quickly, this new word game is a challenge like no other.
Concept and Gameplay:
The Categories Game adds a refreshing twist to an already popular app genre. The goal of the game is simple; name something from the chosen category that starts with a certain letter. Naturally this doesn’t sound like too much of a challenge, but you’d be surprised how difficult it is to think of a fruit that starts with the letter “E”.
You can choose from a very wide range of categories such as Countries, Capitals, Fruits, Human Body Parts, and Vegetables. These categories are free to use at the start of the game. Others such as TV Shows, Car Brands, Airlines, and Colors (just to name a few) need to be unlocked using coins earned from playing the game. Upgrading to the premium version of The Categories Game unlocks an additional 20 categories.
Categories can be easy or difficult depending on how many lightning bolts are shown. The more difficult the category you choose is, the more coins you’ll earn. You have two minutes to answer each question. If you happen to get stumped, you can choose to have an answer revealed for you. However, doing so will cost you one life. Lives, along with coins, can be purchased in the App Store.
When starting a new game, there are quite a few ways you can find others to play with. You can connect The Categories Game with Facebook, find a player by their username or email address, or locate players randomly. You can also choose from people you’ve previously played with. Each multiplayer game can have a maximum of three players.
If you feel that a player has entered an answer that doesn’t belong, you can challenge them. A challenge costs 10 coins and if the challenge turns out to be correct, you are neither 10 coins or all of your opponent’s coins depending on how many he or she has.
The only thing about The Categories Game that is a bit of a disappointment has to be the lack of a single player mode. Personally I think it would be fun to challenge yourself on your own without having to wait for other players to take their turn.
The Categories Game is free to download and is universally designed for both iPhone and iPad. Upgrading to the premium version of the game will set you back $0.99, which isn’t bad at all considering all the new categories that will be unlocked. Plus the subtle ads at the bottom of the screen will be disabled.
Even if you decide not to upgrade to premium, The Categories Game is still very enjoyable to play and I definitely recommend it for anyone who’s looking for an exciting new challenge.
The Categories Game Free is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
