Movie FX Cam: Written & Video iPhone App Review
One of the latest and most prevalent trends within the realm of app design has been the filter-enabled creativity application. You know what we’re talking about. These are those apps that allow you to shoot some video, snap a photo, or otherwise get in on what’s happening around you using your iPhone—and then slap a creative color combination over the top. Most of these are cheap knockoffs of Ye Olden Instagram, but today, we’re covering Movie FX Cam, which is anything but. It’s sleek, it’s professional, and it has a lot to offer the iPhotographer in us all, for both photos and videos. For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, Movie FX Cam fits very neatly into that specific genre of filter-ready creative types. However, it’s not just a cheap run-of-the-mill variety that makes up for a lack of true artistic breadth with a butt load of filters. To being with, the app not only lets you get creative with your photos but also allows you to set beforehand the quality of both the video and the audio. Shoot a high contrast scene for a short, and don’t need to worry much about pixelation? Set the visual low, the audio high, and you’re ready to roll!
From there, things only get better. Despite the fact that Movie FX Cam doesn’t bank on it, the app does come with a tremendous number of filters, all of which are unbelievably solid. Usually there are a few duds, but in this case, you could likely find a purpose for all of them given enough time. They’re rock solid, vibrant, and truly do add a lot to your photos and videos when used tastefully. You can, of course, also add effects post-shoot to any photos (up to 16 mega-pixels) or video that you’ve already shot. All in all, it’s a tight package.
Design and Layout
In our experience, we’ve seen too many similar applications fall short of the mark simply because of their layout. The interface is cheap, the controls complex, etc. However, none of that is an issue with Movie FX Cam. The app is incredibly well designed, offering a professional and very pleasing exterior. The controls are likewise simplistic (see our video review for more). We do lament the lack of direct social networking integration—the API is out there devs!—but future updates could easily bring that along.
At the end of the day, Movie FX Cam is a tremendous, new and vibrant way to get even more functionality out of your iPhone. That alone makes it worth the dollar that it costs, but if you have any interest at all in such things as Instagram or Vine, then you really owe it to yourself to give this one a looking over, too. Take our word for it: Movie FX Cam is a winner.
Movie FX Cam requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
