Brickout Zero Gravity: Written iPhone App Review
If you’ve been following us here at the iPhone App Review for long, then you’re likely aware of the fact that we absolutely adore anything that offers us a classically inspired arcade concept. We’ll tackle just about anything, but this also means we have a keen eye for the top shelf items. With that in mind, may we now present to you Brickout Zero Gravity, by developer Abel Vincze. The app offers a superbly focused recreation of a classic title, though with new additions and a healthy amount of improvements. Best of all, it looks fracking fabulous on the iPad and iPhone 5. Concept and Gameplay
If you have ever touched one of the thousand or so recreations of the classic Breakout or Brick Breaker titles, then you already have a fair understanding of how Brickout Zero Gravity works. However, it’s safe to say that the experience offered here is far from a standard copy or even a clone. It offers a fresh new perspective through its unique zero gravity approach. Essentially, you’ll get the same ping-pong action and the same brick layouts, only friction is meaningless and the points don’t matter—that was a joke.
Blocks and objects will whizz about the level while you play creating moving targets, new configurations and often new headaches. This is a good thing. Additionally, the blocks will often morph into powerful new items or specials, all of which can be accessed simply by hitting them. We promise you, there’s almost nothing as satisfying as laying into a set of explosive power ups, then watching the bricks burst and fade away. Then again, we like the genre.
Graphics and Design
However, one of the things we also like most about the game is its incredible graphics set. We’re not kidding when we say this is about as good as “retro” has been in a long time. The pixelated graphics are pitch perfect for the gameplay, the controls are stunning simple, and the animations are simply awe inspiring. We like the package a lot, for both the contents and the exterior. Furthermore, we loved the two-player game mode, which adds some competitive gameplay to the entire set.
At the end of the day, if you’re willing to spend half the price of a Starbucks latte to obtain some rock-solid gaming action, we simply cannot ignore a Brickout Zero Gravity recommendation. The game is brilliantly good, incredibly gorgeous, and cost effective at only two bucks in the App Store. If you’ve ever enjoyed a brick breaking game in your life, jump on this one. You won’t regret it, we promise.
Brickout Zero Gravity requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod and iPad. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
