Twisted Ways: Written iPhone Game Review
One of the things I love about reviewing games on my iPhone is variety. I have the opportunity to test and play a bunch of games I otherwise would never have tried. Not only that, but I also get to check out brand-new games that have just hit the App Store.
One of these new games, Twisted Ways, is a fun and unique puzzle game that requires a fair amount of strategy and skill. Developed by Stanislav Fedorov, this is one game that will definitely test your puzzle prowess.
Concept and Gameplay:
I’m a huge fan of games that are much more difficult than they initially seem. The whole goal of Twisted Ways is to help your kangaroo character navigate blocks and reach the ladder to the next level. However, it’s not as easy as simply walking (or hopping) across the screen. Instead, you have to strategically move him from block to block while being mindful and thinking a few moves ahead.
Twisted Ways features two different worlds, each with 25 individual levels. These levels include four kinds of blocks with varying characteristics that are activated when your character is moved to them. Green blocks rotate 90° to the right when stepped on, blue blocks rotate 90° to the left, and yellow blocks rotate 180°. Red blocks remain stationary when stepped on.
Sound easy? Not so fast! Most of the blocks on the board only allow you to use one, two, or three sides while moving your character around, meaning you can easily be forced into going the wrong direction. This is where careful planning and strategy come in handy. Your final level score is calculated based on how fast you completed it, with the score decreasing as each second passes.
Even though Twisted Ways seems to be fairly simple and straightforward, it’s definitely a game that will test your patience. Luckily there’s a handy tutorial page that gives you a quick overview of how to play the game. It doesn’t take long to memorize how each block rotates, which means you’ll hopefully be solving puzzles in no time.
Twisted Ways also features clean graphics and great background music. I’ve found that a lot of puzzle and strategy games have distracting soundtracks, but luckily this isn’t the case with this particular game.
Lastly, Twisted Ways definitely isn’t a game you can play through in a matter of hours. Almost every puzzle can be solved multiple ways depending on your play style and personal strategy. Even if you finish all of the levels, there’s always room for improvement and higher scores.
If you’re looking for a challenging puzzle game that will definitely put you to the test, you can’t afford to overlook Twisted Ways. For only $0.99, you’re getting a great game that will keep you occupied for quite some time. Also, the developer is promising more levels in the future.
Twisted Ways is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
