Roamz: Written iPhone App Review

It’s amazing how much we learn about the environment around us via technology. No longer do we ask friends what the best coffee house in town is, because a quick search on the latest popular app shows us more information than we could ask for. What if we’re only looking for a casual tap on the shoulder, though, and a bit of guidance in times of complete indecision?

Roamz, developed by, isn’t your typical “Find stuff to do” app. Using a combination of social media and intuitive organization, Roamz will not only help you find the next cool spot, but remember it as well.

Concept and Functionality:

Personally I love using location-based apps to find new things to do. Seeing as it’s incredibly difficult to know about every single venue in a town or city, a helpful app is invaluable. Roamz isn’t great just for planning a night out, though, and has many wonderful aspects which definitely separate it from similar apps.

To use Roamz, you need to sign up for an account either with Facebook or email. The app is built off of social media, so this isn’t a huge surprise. Once you’re set up, you can start using Roamz to find something to do. The whole point of the app isn’t to show you reviews and ratings of a venue, but to let you see what it’s like based on what people are passively saying about it via networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

As far as layout, it doesn’t take too much time to learn your way around Roamz. Personally I love apps that have everything you need right on the main page, which is how Roamz is designed. Information pages for venues are detailed, too, and show you available images and posts from everyone talking about them.

Sure, Roamz can help you find cool new places to visit based on what other people are posting on various social media sites, but what about (in my opinion) its most valuable feature? Say you found an awesome new coffee house, but you’re only in town for a visit and you’re afraid you’ll forget about it. Simply bookmark the location in Roamz and the app will notify you when you’re nearby.

If you’re completely unsure of what you want to do, the app’s main screen shows suggestion tiles based on your location. These tiles could be for keywords like food and drinks, but there’s also one that covers everything in your area. This is great if you’re feeling truly adventurous!

Lastly, you can add your own posts to Roamz and help build the community while spreading the word about a business. If the aforementioned coffee house serves a cup of cappuccino that’s to die for, why not tell the rest of the world?

Roamz is free to download and definitely rivals similar apps like Yelp. Even though it doesn’t have every piece of information about a business or extensive ratings and reviews of venues, you can learn just as much by reading social network posts by others. If you’re looking for a cool app which will definitely come in handy while out on the town, I suggest giving Roamz a try!

Roamz is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
