Miner’s Gems: Written iPhone App Review
(See below for Promo Code Giveaway!)
Miner’s Gems, by Zafer Basulas, is a relatively laid back iOS app game where players rotate through multiple screens to horizontally arrange falling jewels. Miner’s Gems brings an interesting concept to traditional iOS gaming; that is, the multiple screens featured in it are certainly unique to the game. This app currently costs $0.99 through the iTunes store.
Miner’s Gems is a gem-dropping game where players work to direct gems to fall into horizontal rows of threes. However, Miner’s Gems stands apart from other gem-focused games because of its inclusion of multiple screens. Specifically, Miner’s Gems’ players have to follow the direction of the falling gems as indicated by the moving eyes of the miner; they then scroll right or left on the screen in order to go to the different gem screens to direct the gems. In theory, this wouldn’t be too difficult, but in-game lag made actually doing this to be somewhat more complicated. While playing Miner’s Gems I felt like there was a significant lag between my movements and the direction of the falling gems or even the screens I was scrolling through. Additionally, Miner’s Gems is a somewhat slower game in general; anyone looking for fast paced game play will not find this app to be very entertaining. On the plus side, Miner’s Gems’ scores can be displayed through Game Center Integration which allows players to compete against their friends for high scores.
Appearance and Layout:
The overall layout of Miner’s Gems is great. Players are greeted with a home screen displaying in-game options in a fun font, and the graphics for Miner’s Gems certainly don’t leave any room for complaints. In this area, Miner’s Gems is a game worthy of its price tag. I appreciated the app designers’ choice to make each gem look unique, and I was also pleased with the level of detail put into designing the miner himself. The choice of fonts and backgrounds for Miner’s Gems also seemed appropriate for an app of its type. Overall, the graphics and layout of Miner’s Gems are certainly the app’s strongest attribute and look great on both the iPhone and iPad.
While the graphics and layout of Miner’s Gems are great, these awesome aesthetic aspects don’t adequately make up for what the rest of the game is lacking. Miner’s Gems is currently sold for $0.99 through the iTunes store; this is obviously not a ludicrous price, but it is arguable that there are plenty of free games out there that are more entertaining than Miner’s Gems. While Miner’s Gems might appeal to some, iOS users have quite a few similar games to choose from.
