EmergencyStandards: Written iPad App Review

Reviewed by Michael Naber

EmergencyStandards is an application from medStandards.net and is available for the iPhone and iPad. The point of Emergency Standards is to give you quick and easy access to medical references. The app is really a reference app for any medical conditions. The app currently has 70% of the Emergency Standards algorithms which are currently used at the University Hospital of Basel. So you can tell just from that that the app is going to be of high quality information.

Here’s how it works. The app makes a connection to the medStandards server and registers the device as part of the Emergency Standards. From there, the Emergency Standards are loaded directly onto the app. The great thing is that the Emergency Standards are server-side so the app is always updated with the newest and more recently available information.

The app let’s you access a variety of symptoms and specialities that range anywhere from Abdominal pain to Neurology. If you simply tap on one of the symptoms or specialities, you are greeted with a screen that gives you everything from clinical findings to treatments. This app has the potential to be really useful to doctors or other medical students in addition to the average person.

EmergencyStandards iPad App Review

The content of the app is quite amazing. The application has over 900 clinical standards, with expert medical reviews, and simply amazing information. Emergency Standards is pretty much a database for any symptoms you could possibly want to look up. According to the developer it’s already being used by hundreds of medical professionals, especially young physicians who are guided through difficult situations. It’s also a great app for anyone who is interested, or needs to know medical information. A video they use to showcase its use is here.

The design of the app isn’t that great. But hey, it doesn’t have to be. The purpose of the interface is to get by, not look great. As long as the interface is functional and allows for medical information viewing, it works. The point of the app is to get the user any and all medical information they need about their symptom or speciality, not to look glamorous. That being said, a better design wouldn’t hurt. But if I were to have a more useful app, or a better looking app, I would go with more useful in this case.

Overall Value

Overall the app can be a great resource if you have a medical condition and want more information. It has over 900 clinical standards from a reputable hospital, so you know your getting the best quality information possible. The design could use a little bit of work, but it’s not a big deal. I would recommend this app if you’re seeking quality medical information from a trusted source or hospital.

EmergencyStandards is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
