Reach the Red Ball: Written iPhone App Review

Reach the Red Ball by Nassim Kasmi is a fascinating physics-based game that is sure to provide hours of entertainment for a puzzles-loving fiend. Reach the Red Ball’s purpose is exactly the same as the app’s name; users must use the tools given to them in order to force the black ball in each level to collide with the red ball in that level. Each level is different, and the challenge seems to get harder the further into the game a player gets. Although not a game for everyone, Reach the Red Ball will probably please anyone with a love for the laws of physics.
Reach the Red Ball is a simple game only in concept. The tools provided for users to successfully force the black ball to reach the red ball are varied enough so that there could be a dozen different solutions to the same problem, and no one answer is necessarily the “correct” one. This game features 26 different levels, each of which should be passed before a player moves up to the next one. Reach the Red Ball does not feature any type of scoring system, but such a system is really not necessary; while a “timed” option might seem appealing to some users, I personally appreciated the Reach the Red Ball’s app developer’s choice to keep this game as stress-free as possible. In-game features for how to solve each level in the app include various building blocks/tools and the ability to alter the “bounciness,” density, and orientation of each of those objects in space.
Appearance and Layout:
Overall, Reach the Red Ball is logically laid out. Navigating through the app is simple to do, and a very thorough “how to play” video presents all of the basic functions of the game; these functions can be explored through the “Free” level. Within the app itself, the graphics are certainly minimal but adequate; basic block shapes and simple icons bring users the tools they need to conquer each level. However, while all of the in-game graphics were fine, I personally thought the appearance of the pre-game features could certainly have been improved. For example, the designation of a “free” level was confusing at first; this level perhaps could have been more clearly labeled as a “sample” level instead. Also, the app designer’s choice to use the combination of bright purple and orange as the home screen colors in the game didn’t seem to be the best choice possible, and such colors really don’t fit the mood of the rest of Reach the Red Ball.
Reach the Red Ball currently can be purchased through the iTunes stores for $0.99. For physics-loving fiends, this price will be considered to be well worth it. The game is adequately challenging, but through a relatively basic understanding of the principles of physics, passing levels/completely each challenge is perfectly doable. Additionally, for students in the process of learning physics, Reach the Red Ball could be an app that makes the learning process a little bit more fun.
Reach the Red Ball iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
