iYoga Premium: Written & Video iPad App Review
We live in Boulder, which for those of you not in the know, is a bit of a hipster town. This means we’re constantly being introduced to healthy foods, loads of jogging, and more than the occasional yoga studio. In fact, we’ve been known to give the ancient art of yoga a go ourselves. This is why we’re rather excited to be showing you iYoga Premium by developer 3D4Medical for the iPhone and iPad. The app is easily one of the most intuitive yoga applications we have ever seen, and if you’re looking for a convenient way to get initiated, there’s hardly a better recommendation. For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Functionality
The basic idea behind the app looks something like this: iYoga Premium presents you, the user, with a myriad of poses and positions designed to help you find your inner self—we’re kidding, as they’re really just designed to increase your well-being and muscle strength. You can view these positions by tapping on them, and then observing the illustrations provided. These (creepy, at first) muscle-based animations show you how to exactly perform the maneuvers, while a narrator calmly gives you aural explanations. With several different camera angles included, we have to admit that it’s almost as good as being in class with an instructor: Potentially even better, as you’re the only student in this scenario.
As if that weren’t enough, you can also use one of the many preset groupings, each designed to help you along a certain task: For instance, you might try one that helps you regain energy at lunch, or another that gets you stretched and ready in the mornings. It’s a brilliant addition, as well as a very useful one.
Design and Interface
As stated, we’re already huge fans of the interface. It’s not got the usual greens and blues that we tend to see in these Web 2.0 inspired yoga apps, but we don’t mind so much. The emphasis here is really on the instruction, and at the end of the day, that’s what we’re after within our yoga applications. We also love the unique muscular animations: It’s an incredibly precise affair, even showing you what groups are contracting and stretching.
Our only complaint with the app comes in terms of pricing. It will cost you five bucks at the onset to enjoy what iYoga Premium has to offer, and an additional five dollars thereafter to unlock the Intermediate and Advanced subsections. We’d rather pay a price somewhere in-between for everything, but if you’re looking for a way to get involved with yoga, it’s still an incredible bargain. All in all, despite our price complaints, this one easily earns a recommendation from us!
iYoga Premium requires iOS 6.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
