Art ABC: Written iPhone App Review
Art ABC by Hwa Pyung Song is an app that seeks to combine teaching the alphabet with introducing an appreciation for fine paintings. Art ABC is an app designed for use by children. Specifically speaking, Art ABC is meant to be used by children who are first learning their letters/alphabet; this app also teaches young users beginning spelling ideas, as it uses an “A is for apple” teaching approach. Art ABC currently costs $0.99 .
Art ABC is a beautiful way to teach the alphabet to young learners. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a famous painting that features some object in it that starts with that specific letter of the alphabet. For example, a painting of sheep is used for the letter “S” and an interactive quill pen is found in the “Q” painting. Each painting is narrated while a gentle soundtrack plays in the background. Additionally, each painting is made to be interactive; children can tap on the iOS screen on the object that starts with each respective letter and that object will either move or be “colored in.” This way, Art ABC provides visual, audio, and kinesthetic learners with a solid introduction to the alphabet. While I personally had little use for this app myself, I firmly believe that Art ABC is a solidly built app that will certainly appeal to art-appreciating parents of youngsters and those youngsters themselves.
Appearance and Layout:
The layout of this app is beautifully simple to navigate, which is important because the app is designed to be used by very young children. Art ABC starts out with a charming intro, featuring a famous painting. Then users can choose to go completely through the alphabet or to start at any particular letter (clicking directly on a letter guides users to that letter’s art page). Arrows at the bottom of each screen provide simple navigation options. Each painting featured in Art ABC is an incredible work of art, and the quality of the graphics used to display these paintings is also exceptional. Art ABC is an app that boasts of helping to introduce children to quality artwork, and the layout of this app is perfect for doing just that.
Art ABC costs $0.99. This is a fairly minimal cost, and for parents who are looking for a way to do what this app is designed to do (teach the alphabet in conjunction with introducing fine art), then Art ABC will certainly be considered to be well worth its price. However, for the majority of iOS users, Art ABC is not an app that will be seen as an essential, simply because its target audience is relatively narrow.
Art ABC iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
