AppBounty.net: Written Website Review
For this review, we’re going to deviate from what you usually see here on The iPhone App Review. Instead of checking out the latest and greatest apps, we’re going to take a look at AppBounty.net, a new and promising website dedicated to rewarding you for discovering new apps and games. While websites that reward you for completing certain tasks aren’t new, this is the first service I’ve seen which caters specifically to iPhone and iPad users.
Getting started with AppBounty is very simple. All you have to do is visit AppBounty.net on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch using Safari, register your device with the website, and start downloading new apps. The way AppBounty identifies your device is by installing a profile on your phone, which is harmless and can be removed at any time. Also, a bookmark is added to your device’s homescreen for easy access to AppBounty.
Once your device is enrolled, you’re presented with a list of available apps and how many credits you’ll be rewarded with if you choose to download them. Most apps only require you to download and open them, but some reward extra points for completing tasks such as playing to a certain level or visiting the app’s Facebook page.
Originally I thought that the apps available on AppBounty would be brand new and not that great, but I was definitely wrong. You’ll see apps and games which were featured in the “New & Noteworthy” section of the App Store, along with many that have 4+ star ratings. After choosing which app or game you’d like to try, AppBounty directs you to the App Store so you can download it. Be sure to note any special tasks you need to complete in order to receive credits. My first download worked flawlessly and the credits earned from trying the app showed up on the website almost immediately.
While many rewards sites offer a variety of items, AppBounty focuses solely on iTunes and Amazon gift cards. Amazon reward amounts are $5 and $10, and iTunes amounts are $10, $25, and $50. 5000 vCredits will get you a $10 iTunes gift card or a $10 Amazon gift card. The average app reward is 90 points, so you would need to download roughly 50-60 apps to redeem a 5000 point reward. Naturally there are apps and games which offer more points, so this is just a ballpark figure.
Using AppBounty in a country other than the United States and worried about redeeming gift cards? AppBounty currently allows users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany to redeem gift cards for their respective country. 8 additional countries will be announced at some point in 2013.
One of the things I noticed is that AppBounty doesn’t require you to create an account to keep track of your information. Instead it relies solely on the iPhone profile you needed to install before using the website. I wanted to see what would happen if I closed Safari or “accidentally” uninstalled the AppBounty profile from my phone.
If you return to AppBounty after closing Safari, the website makes you go through the process of re-enrolling your device. The good news is that your credits should still appear after you’ve done this. The bad news is that this can get pretty frustrating if you frequently close Safari. Now let’s say you happen to accidentally delete the AppBounty profile from your phone. Fortunately my credits still appeared on the website even after removing the profile and re-enrolling my device.
Another thing I want to mention is that your credits expire after 60 days of account inactivity. If you sign up for their newsletter, it’ll inform you not only of the news apps available on AppBounty, but when your credits are set to expire.
While other rewards sites can seem shady, AppBounty.net definitely delivers. If you love discovering new apps and games for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, you can do so via this site and earn rewards. Plus you don’t have to keep apps or games on your device if you don’t want to.
A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
