Word Head: Written iPhone App Review
Love words and puzzles? How about the concept of finding words and in a Rubik’s Cube style game? Then the Word Head app from developer Andy Kiger is just the app for you! It is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 5.1 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
When you load the Word Head app, you will be prompted to choose to play either the “Alphabet Quest” game mode or “Word List” game mode. With the “Alphabet Quest” you will be presented with what looks like a Rubik’s cube, except instead of colors to match, each block will have a different letter that can spell into a word, whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally located. You can rotate the cube to search for any of the words listed on the bottom of your device screen. When you successfully locate a word, you can either tap on the first letter or the last letter of the word, and then scroll across to select the entire word. This mode offer 26 total series, and each successful win will unlock a letter of the alphabet. With the “Word List” mode, the game play is similar, with the exception that words to be searched for come from a customized or unlocked list, and the game play only lasts one round.
Appearance and Layout:
The overall appearance of Word Head is relatively decent. The nice thing is, for iPad users, there is a function where you can maximize the app look by selecting the “2x” icon on the bottom left hand corner, transforming the game appearance from an iPod Touch/iPhone point of view, to an iPad view. The animation is smooth, however, the touch sensitivity can be off at times when selecting choice words and scrolling from starting or ending letters. When you begin either game mode, there are a few brief pointers provided at the top of the screen, so the user should be able to figure out how each game goes after a few attempts.
For Word Head being offered for 99 cents is not a bad deal. It has a unique theme and concept and would not only appeal to word lovers, but puzzle aficionados as well. It might be considered a bit challenging for younger users, but the words to be searched for are simple enough for them to give the game a try. It is an entertaining app, and for iPad users, it is a great game that offers an optimized view during their game play and enhances the overall gaming experience.
Word Head iPhone app requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
