Undead Tidings: Written & Video iPhone App Review
It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but no holiday is complete without a smattering of zombie charm. Thank goodness the new Undead Tidings iPhone app from Skunk Studios is here to save the season, with a host of zombie elves and reindeer sure to sate your holiday lust for brains.
The name of the game is pretty simple. Your job is to shoot a barrage of snowballs at the oncoming onslaught of zombie critters. You see, Santa put the Abominable Snowman (fondly known as Abo) on the naughty list. So he’s unleashed his undead minions, and they have a taste for presents, and brains naturally.
In a combination of precision aim gaming and tower defense, you’ll strategically unleash snowballs at lines of the undead. As this game progresses, it gets pretty darn challenging. Your job is to balance rapid fire (your hands go numb after 8 shots in quick succession so be careful!), sniper-accurate aim, and the occasional collectible boost. You’re on the clock, so if you and the presents make it through the night, your score will be calculate and stars awarded based on what’s left and your level of accuracy.
I highly recommend taking a peek at the help section before you start gaming, as the charged snowball and double time shooting features are quite helpful, especially since this game gets pretty challenging in a quick way.
Layout & Design:
Undead Tidings sports four unique locations, which unlock as you progress. The first section alone has 24 levels, so there’s a lot of fun to be had. I dig the unique locations, and the graphics in this app are pretty spot on. They move well, are bright and distinct, and generally pleasant. I have no complaints about the quality of the game.
It is worth noting that the app’s main page has a button that leads to additional apps for purchase, however, that is the only non-kid-friendly feature I found. The app doesn’t have any advertisements, I wasn’t barraged with requests to rate it, and there weren’t any noticeable social media features, meaning Undead Tidings is pretty safe for gamers of all ages.
For just $.99 you can add Undead Tidings to your list of stocking stuffer apps. I think this is one of the most interesting seasonal-themed games I’ve seen this year, and highly recommend it for players of all ages and abilities.
Not sure? Give the free version a go. You’re bound to get hooked. I also like that there’s an HD version of the app for iPad lovers like me. This is one undead war with a Christmas twist you won’t want to miss.
Undead Tidings iPhone app requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
