Traffic Racer: Written iPhone App Review
We’re always going on and on about our particular affection for arcade games, but to be honest, it just doesn’t get any better than besting your next nearest high score on the iPhone. As if we need to give more examples, here’s yet another killer app to just join the genre: It’s called Traffic Racer by developer Soner Kara, and it’s been seriously scratching our need for solid racing style gameplay for several hours now. If you’d like to peep our whole review of this tilt-to-live affair application, then you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
Though Traffic Racer is hardly the first app to do what it’s doing, it does it with a grace that’s particularly noticeable, as well as fun to dip an hand into. The app has you dodging traffic in your souped up car by twisting your iDevice from side to side (or by touching the arrow keys if you prefer this method.) As you go along, you pump the gas to jack up the speed, thus earning more points. Overtake cars to earn even more additional cash. You continue like this—gathering up points and money—until eventually you either crash or run out of time, depending on what game mode you’re using.
You then use the in-app cash to upgrade your car. You can modify its looks, its tyres, and its performance to your hearts content. This is a wonderfully basic, and yet completely addictive way to build a game, and it works every time. We assure you now that it’s quite difficult, if nearly impossible, to put Traffic Racer down. Godspeed, racer!
Graphics and Design
Traffic Racer also happens to look rather fantastic on both the iPhone and iPad. It’s got an excellent cell-shaded aesthetic, as well as a multitude of cars and three unique areas to play through. We appreciated the full ensemble, though we have to admit, we’re concerned about replay.
The app makes it rather hard to get new cars without first either playing the game a lot or purchasing more funds in-app. This adds up to a lot of “grind” time, and as the gameplay itself does not change much through the upgrades, you may find yourself getting a bit bored with Traffic Racer at times.
Still, if you’re into racing or running games on the iPhone and iPad, we promise you’ll find more than enough to love with Traffic Racer. And regardless of how often you revisit the app, we can assure you that the first thirty minutes alone are easily worth the dollar you’ll spend to get inside this tent. Traffic Racer is an easy recommendation for fans of both arcade games and racers alike.
Traffic Racer requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
