Topanga: Written & Video iPhone App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we are constantly on the lookout for that new shopping application that will truly make a difference in the way we go to the store. That being said, it’s rather rare that we find a title that’s unbelievably charming and still useful. Today, however, we’re happy to serve up cold Topanga by developer eWallet Essentials. The app offers a unique and inventive way to keep all of your shopping data in one place, saving it for use later when you really need it. Want our full review? Then simply slide on down the ice beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
The basic idea behind Topanga goes something like this: You’ve likely got about three dozen different receipt books, warranty folders, or record boxes, right? Well, how would you like to be able to condense all of those items into a single, easy-to-use application right on your iPhone? If you’re like us, you’d quite literally jump three elephants to get to an app with that functionality.
Thankfully, you won’t have to do any hurdling: Topanga manages all of this for you, and rather simply, too. When you purchase an item, simply let the app scan the barcode on the box, and most of the work is done! The item, serial number, manufacturer, etc. are stored immediately within the app. Do the same for the receipt, and Topanga automatically stores purchase history, price, and any additional warranty information. In a nutshell, if you can spare a few minutes out of your day post-purchase, you can flash vital information directly to your iPhone without so much as lifting a finger. When it works, it’s truly an incredible sight, and we can’t speak highly enough of it.
Graphics and Interface
Overall, we were quite pleased with the look and feel of the app, as well. The interface is decently laid out, and though we have a few complaints (text buttons are not good replacements for physics ones) none of them are deal breakers. However, we would like to see a few more items represented within the app. The scanner does not work for everything, though we can hardly expect an app to be universal right out of the gate. Still, we hope future updates bring more stocking options along with them.
Topanga is an undeniable value, however. It costs nothing to use, which makes it a phenomenally inexpensive way to log and safeguard your more expensive purchases. Best of all, it’s truly easy to navigate, and as stated, requires no additional input with the two-scan process. All in all, Topanga is an ideal download for the concerned shopper, and an easy recommendation from us!
Topanga requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
