Soccer Puzzle League: Written and Video iPad App Review
Reviewed by Valerie Lauer
This week I took a look at the new Match3Studio title, the Soccer Puzzle League universal iPhone application. After a brief scanning of the app synopsis, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. No matter what my initial impression, I found a totally compelling game that manages to be entirely new and utterly addictive.
Read on to find out how this app combines soccer style gaming, a crazy twist on match-3 play, leveling up and skill development reminiscent of an RPG, and a whole lotta strategy in a single game.
Concept & Gameplay:
In Soccer Puzzle League, it’s you versus the computer in a game of strategic matching. And soccer. Sort of. Allow me to explain.
The app allows you to create player profiles, and you in turn play and develop each profile by earning coins during game play, upgrading equipment, acquiring both passive and active skills and leveling up.
As for the game itself, you play on a game board much like one you would see in a typical match-3 game, however your goal isn’t to simply match up like game pieces. That’s where strategy and soccer come into play. You have a finite amount of defense points. This number starts relatively low, but you can choose to spend points upgrading your defense points. Your opponent, another soccer team, also has a set of points. Each time you manage to clear as many goal points as there are defense points in your opponent’s bank, you earn a goal.
Meanwhile, your opponent will be throwing soccer balls at your game board, which can wreak havoc on your defense points. When your defense points zero out, your opponent scores, and so on. Whoever has the top score at the end of the game wins the match.
I highly recommend playing the game, and leaning heavily on the in-app tutorial. This game is a bit complicated to get the hang of, but once you’ve got it, you’ll be hooked.
Layout & Design:
Soccer Puzzle League
In-app design for Soccer Puzzle League reflects the game’s sports roots. Generally, the graphics are straightforward and clear enough. There’s a lot of game board action here.
The app is optimized for the iPad 2 and up, and the iPhone 4S and up. I played on the iPad 2, and did occasionally experience a little bit of game lag, but I had been playing for quite some time. The game also seemed to tap my battery a bit, but I think that may have been due to the fact that I got hooked and played way longer than I intended to. Oh well!
For a mere $.99, the Soccer Puzzle League iPhone app is a serious value. If you like matching, soccer, puzzles, or long-form games of leveling up skills, you owe it to yourself to check out this app pronto. It’s a lot of fun.
Soccer Puzzle League iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
