Oahu Revealed: Written & Video iPhone App Review
Reviewed by Valerie Lauer
If you’re fortunate enough to be heading to Hawaii’s third biggest island, Oahu, you’re in for a treat. This lush paradise, sometimes called “The Gathering Place” is full of hip urban luxuries and wild adventures. Finding the best of Oahu is easy, with the new Oahu Revealed iPhone app from Crystal Springs Software.
Last year we had a chance to take a look at one of Crystal Spring Software’s other titles, Maui Revealed, and I’m sure this new travel app will be just as exciting.
Looking for a swanky resort or the perfect place for 18 peaceful holes? How about shark diving adventures or the hottest restaurants? The Oahu Revealed iPhone app has you covered.
The app’s easy interface (more about that creative touch after the cut) allows you to pinpoint fun activities, shops and adventures by location on an offline map, or you can search through the built-in guidebook. Oahu Revealed is a successful print guidebook by Andre Doughty, and this app contains all of the goodies buried in this book, only in a much easier to carry and search through version.
Oahu Revealed features a predictive text search, and an organized guidebook where you can search by topic, and even learn about the culture and history of the places you travel. How cool is that?
Photos, links to external websites, contact information and recommendations are all here. In other words, how can you possible travel to Oahu without getting this app? A few ways to improve upon this title would be to include audio tours and more multimedia and user reviews.
Layout & Design:
The Oahu Revealed iPhone app utilizes a unique pinch to zoom map interface to show you all the best things about Oahu, from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu to the historic memorials of Pearl Harbor.
Other features, like the search option and a locate-me GPS feature, are easily linked off the app’s main page. Navigating through the guidebook is really quite easy and logically laid out, which is ideal. You don’t want to have a hard time looking for the information you really need, and you won’t with this app.
On the negative side, I found myself wishing Oahu Revealed was truly universal. It works on the iPad, but is not optimized for the larger screen size. I guess that’s one way to make your use of a guidebook circumspect!
Priced at just $5.99, the Oahu Revealed app is way cheaper than the Oahu Revealed book. It’s even less than the digital Kindle version, and it’s much more user friendly and space efficient than a big old guidebook.
Whether you’re visiting Oahu for the first time, or looking for a new way to enjoy your favorite get away, there’s something new for you to discover in the Oahu Revealed iPhone app.
Oahu Revealed iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
