Myth Defense HD: Light Forces Free: Written iPad App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we’ve always had a very large soft spot in our hearts for those sort of apps that let us live out our tower defense fantasies for hours upon hours at an end. We’ve tried a lot of different titles throughout the years in order to scratch this itch, which leads us to today’s full review offering, Myth Defense HD: Light Forces by developer Smartpix. The app presents a unique and medieval way to game on your iPhone and iPad, as well as quite a bit of fun gameplay. For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
If you could’t tell from the title, the app draws a lot of its inspiration from its predecessors, most notably the now classic iOS title Fieldrunner. Still, Myth Defense HD is definitively its own game, offering a unique twist on the now ageless formula.
First and foremost, the game has a very medieval feel to it—it happens to be set in a fictional and fantasy-oriented medieval period, after all. This already adds a bit of a refreshing twist to the game. From here, though, it’s mostly standard tower defense action to the hilt. You’ll drag towers into place, upgrade them with in-game cash earned by slaughtering advancing hordes, and earn achievements by completing campaigns. It’s fun to be sure, and the developers have fattened it up a bit by offering a sort of rock-paper-scissors style gameplay mechanic involving different tower powerups. Overall, it’s a very solid concept based on the shoulders of many great giants to come before. And this is hardly a bad thing.
Design and Graphics
Similarly, the graphics feel like they’ve been seen before, though we can’t quite place it. It almost feels like the art style is an amalgamation of perhaps a dozen different series into one, which is actually much nicer than you might think. Furthermore, we appreciated the amount of complexity that’s offered within the gameplay, as far as tower upgrades and variety are concerned. Aside from this, you’ll get a wealth of maps to play on, as well as plenty of enemies to destroy. It’s solid, though we may not consider it overtly impressive. At the least, the control scheme and interface is rock-solid, and will definitely win you over.
Did we mention that Myth Defense HD happens to be free? Well, this version of the game, anyway. With this free edition you’ll get one heck of a lot of gameplay, considering its a trial run. However, if you’d like to unlock the additions offered by the pro version, it will cost you a solid three bucks. At this free price range, though, Myth Defense HD is easily worth a download, especially if you’re a fan of RTS or TD games to begin with. All of that in mind, Myth Defense HD still earns a recommendation from us.
Myth Defense HD requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
