MP3 Chopper: Written iPhone App Review
Remember when cell phones had ringtones that sounded like they were from an 8-bit video game? I sure do, and I’m glad technology has advanced in such a way that we can actually customize our phone’s ringtone. However, sometimes creating a custom ringtone can be complicated and frustrating.
Concept and Functionality:
As I mentioned earlier, creating custom ringtones can be tedious. The developers of MP3 Chopper say that their app is the “absolute most user-friendly ringtone maker and/or editor in the world of music apps.” This is a pretty hefty claim to make, so let’s get started.
When I opened MP3 Chopper for the first time, my first thought was that it seemed very organized and easy to navigate. The app automatically imports songs from your device, which is perfect for users who hate having to manually import individual songs. If your library is overflowing, there’s a search bar which will help you locate the song are looking for.
Once you’ve figured out which song you want to make a ringtone out of, you’re taken to the editing screen. All of the necessary editing features are on the same screen, which makes the process relatively painless. You can select how long you want your sound clip to be (the average ringtone length is 20 to 30 seconds) either by setting the duration in the “Length” window or by dragging the right slider on the song bar. The left slider allows you to move the clip window, which is great because it keeps you from having to manually readjust the length every time you switch to a different part of a song.
Saving your ringtone is an absolute breeze. Simply press the “Save” button, name the ringtone, and that’s it. Unfortunately you have to manually add your custom ringtone file to your iTunes library in order to put it on your phone, which isn’t MP3 Chopper’s fault.
You also have the option to share your ringtone via Twitter and Facebook. Lastly, the “History” tab gives you quick and easy access to all of the ringtones you’ve created using MP3 Chopper.
One of my favorite MP3 Chopper features is that it automatically imports all the songs from your device’s library. I’ve used many apps that require you to manually select which songs to import and it’s not fun for someone with a few hundred songs to sift through. Even though this feature doesn’t seem to important, it’s definitely a timesaver.
MP3 Chopper supports various audio formats such as MP3, WAV, AAC, MP4, and AMR. The only thing that frustrated me about the app was that it apparently imported songs even if they didn’t match the supported file type. This caused me to receive an error and I eventually had to force the app to close. It would be better if the app automatically recognized which songs it doesn’t support and excluded them without the user having to go through trial and error (literally).
Another cool feature is the ability to zoom the song bar in and out, which is great for users who are looking to start or stop their sound clip at a very precise time. Lastly, there’s a very detailed “Help” page which will walk you through the process of importing the ringtone to your device via iTunes.
Seeing as I haven’t tested every single ringtone maker in the App Store, I can’t say whether or not MP3 Chopper truly is the most user-friendly app of its kind. However, it’s definitely a promising app and one that is very simple and easy to use. If you do decide to give MP3 Chopper a try, make sure you leave feedback in the App Store.
MP3 Chopper is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
