Here at the iPhone App Review, we are essentially always on the lookout for a new and inventive arcade concept to rock our iPhone or iPad. We like anything that’s inventive, interesting or just downright cool. As such, we’re happy to be introducing you now to Moth Mash by developer Sam Meech Ward. The app comes with all of our usual interests (a fun concept, simple controls, and hours of entertainment) and with a buggy twist we never expected. For our full review, you need only to look down below the break!

Concept and Gameplay

The basic idea behind Moth Mash is not-so-subtly hidden within its title, and looks something like this: You’re charged with protecting a single fan and light in the center of the screen. What are you protecting it from? Well, the horde of light-frenzied moths heading straight for it! They’ll charge their way in, requiring you to smash them with a tap of a finger. However, you’ll need to avoid tapping the fan blades, as they’ll cut you, cutting your game short with a game over.

This may not sound too terribly difficult, but we promise it gets quite challenging. As you go along, more fan blades are added to the mix. Furthermore, the mothball fearing horde grows, requiring more fingers and taps to conquer. And if you happen to let too many bugs into the center lamp, and all the light disappears, you’ll quickly find your high score stopped dead in its tracks. All in all, it’s a fun concept, and one that we quite enjoyed.

Graphics and Design

When it comes to Moth Mash’s graphics and interface, the best word we know to use is “simplicity.” Nothing here is too awe inspiring, simply because Moth Mash just isn’t the best-looking arcade game we have ever seen on the iPad. That being said, it’s hardly bad, but rather simplistic. The graphics are plain and engaging, while the interface is kept at a bare minimal. Furthermore, the gameplay controls could not be more basic: Just tap the screen where you want to squash a moth—it really is that easy! We appreciate this, and though it may lose the app a few stunning beauty points, it’s hardly too big a deal breaker.

Overall Value

And, of course, you can hardly argue with the price of Moth Mash: For nothing at all, you can snag this app straight out of the App Store, and spend a good half hour to several afternoons plugging away at its fun, buggy and engaging concept. To us, that easily earns the app a solid recommendation, as well as more than a few words of praise. Moth Mash is a solid arcade title for the iPad.

Moth MashMoth Mash requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
