LETZ: The Story of Zed HD: Written & Video iPad App Review
It’s not often that we give out a perfect score here at the iPhone App Review, which is why we’re going to just jump straight into the heart of this review with particular vigor. You see, LETZ: The Story of Zed HD by developer About Fun is absolutely fantastic, offering a perfect combination of word gaming and arcade Bejeweled action. It’s endlessly engaging, infinitely replayable, and an absolute value on the iPad. Best of all, it just looks gorgeous. For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, LETZ is a unique combination of both letter-based word gaming and Bejeweled style color matching. In essence, the player is asked to pop a board full of colored objects by matching sets of three or more. Set up a slide of four, and you’ll prime another piece on the board as a “super piece” capable of knocking out a full row. Hit five of the suckers at once and another piece is armed as a “color killer”—this bit knocks out all pieces of the same color on the board.
However, this is only the beginning of the powerups, twists, and monumental turns that keep the gameplay fresh. Least among these tricks, you’ll need to pop certain pieces to obtain letters to pass the level. Each stage requires you to spell a specific word, but as you collect additional letters, you can spell new words to obtain further powerups and points. Oh, and you’ll also want to do this quickly to obtain the time badge—but be sure to score a lot of points to get the point badge that’s available per-stage. Not to mention the need to beat your high score in the first place—
If we haven’t made it clear by this point, LETZ is an endlessly rich and engaging concept, and the gameplay is unbelievably fantastic.
Graphics and Design
Better still, the game is simply gorgeous. It’s got a unique vector inspired artwork set that’s clearly been sat down and workshopped for a great period of time. This is added on top of controls that could not be simpler to use. Just tab or slide the pieces or letters to play the game. Better still, the endlessly inventive number of powerups and letter games included “on the side” show a truly professional level of thought and preconception injected into the traditional color matching.
At the end of the day, LETZ is simply marvelous. It’s one of our favorite arcade games on the iPad ever, and if that’s not reason enough to download it and give it a go, then we don’t know what is. For fans of either word gaming or color matching—or both, for that matter—this is not one you’ll want to miss.
LETZ: The Story of Zed HD requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPad 2 and newer (including iPad Mini). A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
