Laser Pegs: Written and Video iPad App Review
This Christmas, are you looking for something to give to your LEGO-obsessed child that’s a little bit more entertaining, a little bit more out of the box, and a little bit more engaging? If so, then we might just have the perfect recommendation for you! It’s called Laser Pegs, and it’s just about the absolute best combination of real-world combinable pieces and iOS app technology that we have ever seen. Come to think of it, it’s just about the only example of this we’ve ever seen, too! Either way, for our full review you need only to slide on down below the break.
Concept and Functionality
To break down the idea behind Laser Pegs, you first need to know what a Laser Peg is. Essentially, it’s like everyone’s favorite plastic construction toy, only with some new innovations. The pieces aren’t squares and rectangles, but are more like pipes. These are connected end-to-end to create an infinite number of different creations and shapes. And when all of the adjoining pieces are connected to a power source—included with any Laser Pegs purchase—the whole thing lights up with a flurry of color.
It’s really quite inventive, and the best part is that it comes with an iPad app. Laser Pegs Ventures have released a free Laser Pegs-flavored app that allows your children to build their own creations from their armchair. They can download and share construction manuals, export images of their lit-up creations from within the app, and in the best case scenario, dream a little bit. All in all, it’s a very enticing package, and we imagine most parents will be feeling the same by this point.
Design and Graphics
With that in mind, let’s talk about the app’s design. First of all, it’s not quite as “kid friendly” as we might like it to be. This simply means that the graphics are a little too fresh from the Blender to be imbued with soft corners and softer-on-the-eyes child-proof appeal. However, it could not be simpler to build your creations. The touch-based controls are a cinch, even if they do take a while to coerce into a full creation. To this end, the developers have introduced a delightfully time-saving end-to-end construction tool. Tap one end of a piece, tap another in your diagram, and it’s instantly added! This is, of course, every bit as convenient as it sounds.
Did we mention that the application is also free? This makes it an unbelievable value, and one that we can’t help but recommend to any parent or child who has given or received a Laser Pegs toy set this Holiday Season. If you’re in this lucky boat, go ahead and grab the app. It’s free, it’s the perfect companion piece, and you’ve got nothing to lose!
Laser Pegs requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
