JetPack Jinx: Written & Video iPhone App Review
Over the years, we’ve had more than enough opportunity to play a few climbing games here and there. You know the sort: You start at the bottom of a level, and then by tilting your device and either jumping or shooting, you continuously reach for the heavens. However, we have yet to see an arcade app within the genre quite as smooth or quite as fun as Jetpack Jinx by developer Bubblegum Interactive. It’s the absolute best combination of unique elements, fantastic graphics and simple controls we have yet to see in the field. And for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
At first blush, you might think Jetpack Jinx a fairly standard addition to an already plentiful genre. It’s certainly got a lot in common with more seminal titles like Doodle Jump. However, there are some very important distinctions.
For instance, rather than jumping your way to a new high score, you play an alien with a jetpack, starting at the ground level of a planet before rocketing upward to find your lost ships. Along the way you’ll be collecting coins and other items that help you sustain your flight. All of this is incredibly interesting, and now for the best part: You get to keep your progress. As you fly, you’ll seamlessly unlock new platforms and levels, as well as items for you to use later. It’s a truly ingenious way to twist the genre, as we’ve discovered we love being continuously rewarded for our efforts. It feels good, and it certainly makes the action a lot more fun. And with several levels, a wealth of enemies to dodge, and even more items to collect, we’ve certainly got our hands full with Jetpack Jinx for some time to come.
Design and Graphics
As a universal application, Jetpack Jinx also happens to look pretty fantastic on both the iPhone and the iPad. It’s got a uniquely cartoon-like graphics set that we appreciated immensely, as well as some spot-on-in-simplicity controls. You’ll only need to tilt the device from side to side to play the game, and at faster speeds, this alone can prove to be rather challenging. Finally, the complexity and richness of the items and worlds created here add so much to the enjoyment we get from Jetpack Jinx that it’s almost unreal. Truly a solid production here, lads.
Better still, Jetpack Jinx also happens to be free! This means you’ll not need to pay a single pence to enjoy what the app has to offer. You can, should you choose, fork up some real money for some in-game cash to buy items and additions, but this is hardly necessary. And at the end of the day, any app that offers this much fun at such a rock-bottom price is an easy recommendation in our book.
Jetpack Jinx requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
