Guitar Coach Magazine: Written iPad App Review
Typically here at the iPhone App Review, we like to stick to traditional applications, and not those items restricted to the Newstand. However, occasionally we do find an offering that simply cannot be turned away. Today we’ve got just such an offering, called Guitar Coach Magazine by developer Guitar Media. The newsfeed provides free access to simply one of the best guitar magazines we have ever seen—and we used to play the axe professionally. All in all, it’s a well-designed, well meaning, and penny-pinching way to learn to play everyone’s favorite rock instrument. And for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break.
Concept and Functionality
As a magazine supported by the Newstand, Guitar Coach Magazine just about as you might expect it to. The app lets you flip from page to page, viewing the included information and sliding through the volumes like a traditional magazine. However, this isn’t to say that the app doesn’t expand upon the concept of a traditional publication with a few welcome twists.
For instance, the magazine includes copious links to more information, further resources, and additional tit-bits to educate you about the concept du jour. We appreciated this immensely, as it truly helps to reestablish the medium at hand, and to make it its own on the iPad. In a lot of ways, we even prefer the approach that Guitar Coach Magazine supports to something more traditional like Guitar Player Magazine.
Design and Content
Okay, now to put the meat on these bones: First of all, we used to play guitar professionally in the studio and on the stage. We’re not saying we’re Eric Johnson, but we know our way around a guitar. As such, we can confidently tell you that the information and lessons contained within Guitar Coach Magazine are top-notch and on-par with any lesson or resource we have ever encountered. The lessons themselves are in-depth and informative, while the additional articles and resources about guitar information and opportunities add a great deal to the value of the magazine. On top of all this, the simple page layouts of the magazine are fantastic. It’s obvious that the developers have worked long and hard to produce a magazine that both looks good and brings its money where its mouth is.
Of course, all of this just goes to say what you’ve likely already guessed by this point: Guitar Coach Magazine is a phenomenal resource for both the burgeoning and veteran guitar player. No matter where you are or what you’re looking to learn, Guitar Coach Magazine has what you need, and completely for free on the iPad. Beyond just recommending the app, we have to strongly encourage you to snag it. You won’t regret the decision to do so.
Guitar Coach Magazine requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
