French-English Dictionary +: Written iPhone App Review
Looking for an app to make learning a foreign language fun, interactive and customizable? Look no further. Our good friends at Ascendo Inc. offer a full range of language acquisition apps that just keep getting better. The latest update is no exception. Let’s take a look at how French English Dictionary + lines itself up to be best in class.
There’s a huge range of foreign language dictionary apps out there, but the French English Dictionary + iPhone app manages to combine the useful utility of a predictable text searchable dictionary with cool multimedia features.
“Dictionaries have traditionally been useful, but somewhat boring tools,” said Marc Bolh, CEO of Ascendo Inc. “We are changing that by allowing users to add images, audio clips and notes to entries, making them engaging travel companions in addition to great reference tools.”
And the dictionary is just the beginning. French English Dictionary + also comes with more than 6,000 conjugated verbs, a comprehensive phrasebook perfect for travelers or those in French class and (my favorite) a quiz section that tests your knowledge on all kinds of words.
The most recent version of this app ups the ante, with even more dictionary entries, a single index database, phrase editing, and online word lookup, so you’re covered, even if the word you’re after isn’t in the app yet.
Layout & Design:
Not only is French English Dictionary + an amazing foreign language app, it’s also quite easy to use. I’m particularly fond of the lookup history, and simple bottom tab design. You can also customize the dictionary font and color, making it oh so user friendly. I do think the overall design could use a bit of a slicker presentation, but when you’re looking for information you want finding it to be simple, and in that way this app delivers quite well.
I’m also highly impressed by the app’s perfect universal availability. It looks great on the iPad, but works like a charm on the iPhone or iPod touch.
For $9.99, you get a fully functional dual language dictionary, complete with awesome features like in-app quizzes and multimedia customization of entries. That’s less than you would spend on a mediocre print dictionary. If you’re not sold, consider checking out the free versions first, but, be aware, you’ll end up wanting the full version in minutes.
If you’re a language student, a traveler, or just someone with a passion for new things, do yourself a favor and add the latest version of French English Dictionary + to your app catalog. You’ll be glad you did.
French-English Dictionary + requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was provided to speed up the publication of this review.
