Colorcut: Written & Video iPhone App Review
If you’re looking for a deceptively addictive game with a whole lot of slicing action, and a peppy soundtrack that can turn that frown upside down, look no further. The new Colorcut iPhone app from the aptly named User Friendly Games is the perfect new game for you. Read on to find out why.
Colorcut is one part Fruit Ninja, one part bubble burster, and 98 parts fun. In this engaging iPhone app it is your job to slide red, blue and yellow bubbles as they bounce around a brilliant sky. Naturally, it’s not just that easy, unless you want it to be (see Relax mode!). There’s a timer to contend with, dull gray balls that want to spoil your Colorcut party, and plenty of challenges and extras to figure out along the way.
It’s all about strategy, you see. Cut a yellow and red ball at the same time to boost your timer, or a yellow and a blue to up your point multiplier. If you’re looking for more strategic advantage, try combining blue and red balls to gain purple orbs, which can be used to slow spiraling balls or collected to create special purple balls.
It’s like one gigantic, sporadically bumping, mobile game of Risk! Well, not exactly, but there is a certain amount of thought that needs to go into your bubble slicing strategy.
Colorcut comes with three distinct gaming modes. Classic mode is full on game, so I don’t suggest starting out there. Relax mode is a chill version of the game with soothing, slowly spiraling balls that are easily sliced, with no gray balls to fuss with. Then there is my favorite part of the app: Adventure Mode! In Adventure mode you complete tasks in beginner, advanced and expert level games. Starting in Adventure mode is the best way to learn the ropes of the game, so I highly recommend it, for the tutorial aspect and because it’s super fun to work through all of the goals.
The app also ties into GameCenter, for easy high score tracking on a global leader bored that you are so going to want to earn a place on.
Layout & Design:
It’s all bright colors and crisp, cheerful graphics in Colorcut. For some reason, I don’t mind that, or the super-peppy app soundtrack. Cool touches like a reactive sky that alters color based on your slice combinations manage to make the rainbow cacophony of colors in this app entirely acceptable. I’ve got little to no complaints.
As for functionality, this app works well. I do have a random complaint about purple bubbles not always responding, but, otherwise, I’m entirely happy with the way Colorcut has some built in user forgiveness. Well done.
Speaking of well done, so is the price tag. Colorcut is a steal at just $.99. This app is seriously fun, entirely addictive and really well made. Put your skepticism aside and prepare to be thoroughly entertained by this high quality title from User Friendly Games.
Colorcut iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
