Zombie Detector (Smart Camera): Written iPhone App Review
Zombies are all the rage these days. Whether you’re a casual follower of shows like The Walking Dead or an all-out zombie apocalypse believer, you’re sure to enjoy this app as much as a zombie loves a brain.
Zombie Detector (Smart Camera), developed by Studeo410, promises to rip off the human masks that zombies all around you are wearing. This entertaining app transforms you into the ultimate zombie hunter.
Concept and Functionality:
Special effects camera apps are nothing new, but to find one that works is pretty rare. The idea for this one is simple; take or import a photo with someone’s face in it and the app automatically replaces their face with that of a zombie.
When you’re taking a photo specifically for Zombie Detector, you can switch between your device’s cameras (if applicable) and choose a flash setting. After you’ve taken the photo, you’re shown a preview screen which allows you to see the zombie face superimposed on the original picture. You can also add a touch of color to the photo before saving it. Better add “hipster zombies” to your list of known species.
After that, it’s up to you as far as what you want to do with the photo. The idea is to share it with people, so that handy “Share” button at the bottom of the screen allows you to do so via a bunch of different ways. You can email it, print it, save it to your camera roll, and post it to social network such as Twitter and Facebook.
Zombie Detector also includes a built-in photo library. While useful for those who like to keep track of photos taken with a certain app, I was disappointed to find that it doesn’t automatically save photos to the library. Instead, you have to manually do this via the share menu. Though it might not be a dealbreaker for everyone, I honestly feel this is an extra step which shouldn’t exist.
Lastly, Zombie Detector includes an info page which gives you access to in-app upgrades that unlock more zombie faces and disable ads. The app’s iTunes description says that this page also includes information about zombies, but I wasn’t able to find anything. It would be cool if the app included some sort of description to go with each face.
Even though Zombie Detector has quite a few saving and sharing features, I’m going to bust on it a bit for not having more customization options. For example, there’s no way to reposition or resize the superimposed zombie face. Seeing as the app automatically adds the face to photos, it doesn’t always do it perfectly. It would be great if users had this editing options so they could make their photos even better.
Other than that, I really wish the free version included more than one zombie face. This would make group photos a lot more interesting and diverse.
It’s rare for me to give a free app less than 4 1/2 stars for value. I believe Zombie Detector has an immense amount of potential, but there are just too many features missing that are available in other free apps which do the same thing. If the developers add photo editing capabilities and a few more zombie faces to the free version, this will definitely be a favorite app amongst all zombie lovers.
If you like, you can spend $0.99 to unlock 12 additional zombie faces and disable ads. $1.99 will unlock 22 new faces and also disable ads.
