Okay, fine: We’ll admit it now just to get it out of the way. We’re what you might call “urban addicts,” and no we don’t mean that in a way that would get us in trouble with the law. Rather, we’re rather hooked on the fashion, arts, and entertainment that make up big cities across the world. As such, we like to keep a firm finger on the pulse of what’s happening, without restriction. This is why we’re tickled pink (or rouge) to look at total:spec by developer Market Entry Media. The app serves as a vast compendium of information regarding all things metro, and we cannot get enough of it. For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break.

Concept and Functionality

To begin with, yes total:spec (lowercase for maximum impact, lads) serves as a sort of superpowered RSS feed: It gathers up juicy tit bits from the world over regarding everything from fashion to politics and back to entertainment. Want to read interviews with celebrities? You got it! Want a bit of some discussion concerning the US elections? You can have your (fabulous) cake and eat it, too!

However, the iPhone edition of total:spec goes beyond this. We’ll cover more of the news side within the iPad review, but here, let’s talk features. total:spec lets you check-in at venues to get information about who else is there. It also lets you snap photos of your activities, enter contests to win fierce prizes, and—most importantly—see what venues are near you to enjoy. This is an absolutely killer feature, especially for the out and about socialite. If you like to stay informed about your surroundings, and can’t find a good source to trust, then total:spec is above and beyond your option du jour.

Interface and Design

Want even more good news? We’re happy to serve it up, as total:spec actually looks rather nice on the iPhone. It’s got slick sliding interface, as well as a layout that ensures all of the necessary bits are well within reach when you need them. We had no problem navigating through the features, and we experienced no bugs, hangups or other humbugs of any sort. All in all, it’s clear that total:spec was designed to be a serious platform for its media, and the end result speaks volumes for the care the developers have put into this.

Overall Value

We’ll spin it to you this way: total:spec is a free app, but it does require a subscription—one that’s unbelievably cheap if you’re interested. For only £0.69 a month you can enjoy the full benefits that total:spec has to offer, including those check-ins, map checks and news feeds. All of this adds up to a seriously good deal, and one that we cannot help but recommend for the fashion, arts, or entertainment enthusiast.

totalspectotal:spec requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
