total:spec HD – Written and Video iPad App Review
In a previous review we took a quick crack at one of our new favorite iPhone applications, total:spec by developer Market Entry Media. Today, we’re coming back with another look at an app by the developer, this time the iPad-enabled edition of the same fashion, arts and entertainment resource entitled total:spec HD. Thanks to the iPad, the app has infinitely more room to breath, as well as to fan its wears and hold our interest. It’s a brilliant addition to any enthusiasts iPad, and if you’re looking for our full review, you’ll find it tucked away below.
Concept and Functionality
Like its smaller sister, total:spec HD has one purpose, and one purpose only. To be your all-in-one resource for information regarding trends, news, and events within the realms of fashion, arts and entertainment. That was a mouthful, so we’ll phrase it this way: If you’ve ever stopped to admire a thousand dollar dress in a shop window on your way to the club, you’ll get a lot out of total:spec HD. We certainly do, and we can only barely approach that requirement.
What we’re getting at is this: total:spec HD allows you to keep up to date through celebrity interviews, news releases, popular discussion, and even trailers. In fact, that’s only the surface of what you can access thanks to the app’s spacious yet luxurious interface. You never know what you’ll find has been updated within the app, which means it’s a new experience with each look. It’s like having a fashion magazine that constantly renews itself with fresh content. We quite liked this appeal, and we also found the content within the app to be simply fabulous. Seriously, if you have ever considered yourself to be cosmopolitan, then total:spec HD has the vibe and material that you’re looking for.
Design and Interface
Did we mention that total:spec HD looks absolutely fantastic on the iPad? The interface reminds us a lot of the app Flipboard, but not in such a way that it feels like a knockoff. Rather, the app has been cleverly sorted to keep all the important features within spitting distance, while the text, interviews and videos render flawlessly. In fact, we had no problems whatsoever sorting through all of the data being pulled by total:spec HD: An in-app sorting system simplifies the whole experience to the point where it could not be easier to view what we want, when we want it.
The going price for total:spec HD is the same as the iPhone version: You’ll pay nothing for the app, though it will cost you £0.69 to keep for one month. Still, this is nothing compared to what we pay for fashion magazines anyway, and as a continuously updating source, it’s one hell of a bargain. All in all total:spec HD is a brilliant value, and one that we cannot help but recommend to the arts enthusiast.
total:spec HD requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
