Tortooga: Written & Video iPad App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we’ve noticed a formula with which game developers can quite easily dupe a good review out of us. First of all, your app must be an arcade game with a whimsical premise. Secondly, it must be insanely fun to play when we’re bored on the week-ends. And thirdly, it must offer up a unique concept to pin the whole thing on. The most recent app to exemplify all three points and rock our iPhone? Tortooga by developer Think Pinch. It’s got a heck of a lot of fun gameplay wrapped in a pleasantly priced box. And for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
Tortooga bills itself as a tap-based game, so that’s what we’ll be calling it from the here on out. Essentially, the app has you looking at a grid on the top half of your screen. There you’ll see a collection of various icons—treasure chests, coins, pirates, cannons, etc. All of these bits and pieces stick religiously to the delightful island pirate metaphor that the game uses. It’s the right amount of folly for the gameplay, and we love it to death.
Along the bottom of the screen, the user must tap a mirrored grid to obtain the good items (parrots, coins, and chests) while avoiding the bad ones (salty seadogs and their ilk). By doing so, they’ll start to accrue points, which are in turn used to pass the level. They can earn more points by swiping more items at once. Should they hit too many foul targets in a row, they’ll suffer a game over. All in all, it’s a very solid concept, and one that had us madly tapping and dashing away with the best of them.
Design and Graphics
And we suppose that’s the real trick with Tortooga: Sure, it’s a fun new concept, and it is completely unique. However, the real kicker is its killer design. It’s got a great graphics set, a fun atmosphere to inhabit, and more than enough quirk to keep our interest. Plus, it has a plethora of levels for the user to bang and slam their way through. Overall, it’s the quality of presentation that really sets Tortooga apart.
Best of all, the app is completely free—for now! It won’t remain so, and in fact, it will become one dollar next week. Which means we’re going to spin things to you this way: Right now, Tortooga is an absolute steal as a free application. As a one dollar purchase, it’s still an incredible bargain. If you’ve been looking for a new arcade game to play with on your way to work, we can hardly recommend anything else over Tortooga.
Tortooga requires iOS 5 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review. The iPhone app reviews rating:
