Tangled Curiosity: Written iPhone App Review
We’ve mentioned it more than a few times here at the iPhone App Review, but no matter how we slice it up, the point remains the same: We go absolutely bananas for puzzle games on the iPad and iPhone. There’s just something about that screen and all the time in the world to solve a few problems that gets our blood pumping. Today, we’re honored to be bringing along a full review of a title called Tangled Curiosity by Intel (of all places). This app offers up a wealth of quality puzzling action, a unique concept, and even some educational value to slip in the back door. For our full analysis, you need only slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
We’ll talk about the strictly gameplay side of things first: Essentially, the app has you arranging a stream of data through several nodes. The number and layout of these data points changes per level, so you’ll never quite get the same results twice. However, you will always need to use at least a few fingers to try to mangle the swirling, throbbing mass of datum into place. This is often much harder than it may initially seem. Additionally, this isn’t so much a thinking with your brain puzzler as it is a thinking with your fingers one—you’ll learn a lot more about how to solve the puzzle by dipping your hand right into the paint, so to speak. We liked this, though we might have expected something a bit more cerebral from Intel.
Regardless, the app also comes with some educational value. When you solve a puzzle, you are immediately rewarded with a factoid of history: These range from the scientific to the curious and back again. All in all, we thought it a great way to reward the player for their efforts in a calm, relaxing manner.
Graphics and Design
We should probably also mention the fact that Tangled Curiosity is gorgeous on the iPhone and iPad. Intel has gone with an almost Tron like look that we favored immensely. The whole thing glows like it’s been set on fire, and the end result is an endlessly engaging world of swirling colors and vibrant hues. It’s absolutely delightful, and we can’t get enough of it. Furthermore, the touch controls are as simple as putting your finger on the iDevice and maneuvering.
At the end of the day, Tangled Curiosity is a truly marvelous addition to the puzzling genre for iOS. It’s a great app by an even better company, and it arrives with a wealth of solid gameplay and factoids. If you’ve been pining for an engaging new title to mess about with on your morning commute—or during a lazy Sunday—this is easily one to go for. Tangled Curiosity gets our full recommendation.
Tangled Curiosity requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPad and iPhone. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
