Stealth Checkers: Written iPhone App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we are constantly on the look out for the next best puzzler to rip through our household. In other words, we want a game we can curl up with beside a loved one, and then steam through for hours on end. To this end, may we now present Stealth Checkers by developer Dreamgames. The app is an absolutely delightful combination of checkers and chess that results in a truly unique gaming experience. For our full review, as well as our eventual recommendation, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Stealth Checkers is little more than an oddly effective and addictive combination of two of the oldest board games in existence: On one hand you’ve got the barn favorite checkers, but it’s been dubbed over with the rules of chess—that most critical of puzzlers. The end result is unbelievably satisfying, and a bit easier to pick up than you might think.
Essentially, the player will be playing checkers: Though you can opt to capture the opponent’s king rather than all his pieces. But before each turn, the players roll a set of dice. One dice tells you what unit you have to assign, while the other gives you a number of spaces they can travel. You then pick a checkers piece, which becomes your available unit, and move it so many paces forward or backward.
All of the typical moving rules to chess apply, as do the checkmate initiatives. All in all, it’s exactly what you’d expect it to be, though you may never have expected it in the first place.
Graphics and Design
We’re going to be honest with you: Stealth Checkers just isn’t the greatest looking game we have ever seen on the iPad or iPhone. It’s got a very generic feel to it that we just didn’t favor. Furthermore, there’s simply not a lot of direction give to the player: You’ll spend just a few moments figuring out the rules, though little more than that. Overall, though, none of this impedes the gameplay, which is surprisingly rich and infinitely superb. And as always, future updates could easily iron out some of the details as far as aesthetics are concerned.
And regardless, Stealth Checkers is certainly a value, as it costs only a single dollar in the App Store. That means you can enjoy all of the action it has to offer with either your iPad or iPhone’s computer—or a friend—for little more than a stick of gum. To us, that makes Stealth Checkers an easy addition to any chess, checkers or puzzle fanatic’s iOS device.
Stealth Checkers requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
