Simply Write: Written iPad App Review

Simply Write for iPad

Reviewed by Luke Patrick

When the first iPad came out, we were one of those crazy nutjobs in line at the Apple Store waiting to get our hands on the gleaming thing. Since then, we’ve been known to call ourselves “early adopters.” As such, we’ve tried just about every conceivable way to use our iPads in modern life—most important of which is using it to take notes. With that in mind, we’d like to present to you today one of our new favorite notation apps, called Simply Write by developer Ziggytech. The app makes it incredibly simple to create handwritten notes on your iPad, and without the clutter.

Concept and Functionality

If you have ever before used a notes app on the iPad, then you already have a rough handle on how Simply Write gets the job done. It begins by allowing you to create various notebooks, which will store all of the countless pages you create by scrawling over your iPad’s screen. How does it record your words? Well, to be honest, in a pretty fantastically easy way.

You begin by clicking the first line of a page. From there, simply start writing individual letters with your finger. The app has been split up into a number of rows, each of which is designed to contain your letters as you write them out. Once you’ve finished, Simply Write automatically takes all of this input and collects it into a full page of notes. It’s that easy. You need not worry about broken lines, words or phrases, as the app handles this for you. All in all, if you’ve got a finger or a stylus and the desire to save a few trees, you’ll quickly find your good to roll with Simply Write.

The concept of Simply Write is a mixed bag: You see, we love the simplicity it offers, especially as it contains no additional clutter to distract us from our notes. However, this can also be a burden: The app has no connectivity with DropBox or Evernote, which means we can’t automatically sync up our stuff. It also does not have the option to load PDFs, or do any of the other fancy things we use our notes apps for.

Overall Value

Which leads us to an inevitable question about value: The app is still a great recommendation and a tremendous value, especially at the dollar it costs. As such, it’s the ideal app for those in need of a super lightweight alternative to the bloated titles running amok in the App Store. However, if you’re looking for a Penultimate replacement, you won’t find it here as easily as you might hope. Rather, this is the streamlined motorcycle to the Penultimate bloated Bentley—a fact that’s hardly a bad thing, and is a tremendous steal in the App Store.

Simply WriteSimply Write requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
