Jet Raiders: Written iPhone App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we’ve had a long standing love affair with top-down, shoot-em-up arcade games. You know the sort: You start at one end of a course, and then blast your way Rambo style to the opposite end. It’s a brilliant way to pass the time, especially if it involves airplanes, boss fights, endless streams of powerups and killer graphics. As does Jet Raiders by developer, if you could not already tell. If you’re looking for a full review of this excellent title, you’ll find it hidden below beyond the break.
Concept and Gameplay
As already stated, Jet Raiders falls very squarely into that category of classic, down to earth airplane shooters, the sort we used to enjoy immensely in our local pizza parlor on a friday night. The game comes with a variety of different modes, including a classic setup with goals and objectives, a timed mode to race the clock against, and a full on infinity setting that lets you fly as long as your wings will let you. All of these are great fun, and they’re equally compounded by the plethora of levels left to unlock, as well as additional planes to fly.
However, what truly makes Jet Raiders the ideal candidate for your next arcade fix is its strict adherence to the classics. It’s got gorgeous, cell-shaded graphics, powerups galore, large enemies to take out, and a wonderfully simplistic control scheme. All in all, it’s an easy shoe-in for anyone who has ever played a similar title. If you happened to enjoy your last foray into the genre, then you’ll not come away disappointed with Jet Raiders—quite the opposite in fact.
Graphics and Design
As we’ve already mentioned, we quite like the graphics of the app. They’re crisp, cheery, and yet gritty in a way that reminded us immensely of some truly stellar XBOX 360 titles to have emerged in the last five years. The controls behaved flawlessly, and we had no problems managing the tilt mechanic. Often times the physics underneath the hood is a bit squirrely, but in Jet Raiders’ case, everything “just worked.” This meant we had more time than ever to focus on blowing up baddies, collecting higher scores, and generally kicking butt.
At the end of the day, Jet Raiders is slightly higher than the price range at which we usually like to recommend applications. Still, for the amount of content, care and presentation value that you’ll be getting with the app, we’d be crazy not to recommend it to fans of the genre, as well as those who just like a good old arcade romp on the town. The price is fair, the gameplay is excellent, and the hours you’ll spend playing are dearly worth it. Jet Raiders is a solid recommendation from us.
Jet Raiders requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
