Green Screen Movie FX Studio: Written and Video iPad App Review
A couple of months back we had the pleasure of reviewing an up and coming movie editing application for both the iPhone and the iPad. It was called Green Screen Movie FX, and it showed a lot of promise and potential for our editing-on-the-move. We’re tickled to pink to announce today that the app is back as Green Screen Movie FX Studio, and with a whole roster of improvements and fixes the likes of which we had not thought possible. If you’re looking for our full review, you’ll find it tucked below just beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
When shooting video on our iPhone or iPad, we tend to use a number of different apps. We do this to achieve all of the various effects and editing bits that we need. For instance, we’ll shoot something in iMovie, then ship it over to another app to add some muzzle flashes or lens flares. However, Green Screen Movie FX Studio makes a legitimate play at removing all of these additional steps. It attempts to be your all in one FX editor, and it manages to do a damn good job of it, too.
The app comes with a full roster of some 80-plus effects you can use. With the app you can add the aforementioned muzzles flashes, explosions, and fire effects, as well as a number of chroma-keyed backgrounds. This was a strongsuit of the app the last time we saw it, and the functionality as only improved since. It’s a refined process that allows you to rather fantastically green screen just about anything from your iPad or iPhone. However, we were also quite impressed by the stand-in actor effects you can add to any movie. Want a T-Rex to chase you across the street? Just film it, and then do the rest in Green Screen Movie FX Studio.
Graphics and Design
Brace yourself: We’re about to serve up a mixed bag of signals.
First of all, we’d like to say that we thoroughly enjoy how thorough Green Screen Movie FX Studio is in its offerings. You can achieve just about any effect you’re looking for through the app, and that is not an exaggeration. Furthermore, the chromakeying is top-notch to the end.
However, we absolutely hate some of the in-app icons, as they’re rough and a bit shaggy on the edges. Furthermore, the animations and sliding mechanics simply aren’t as smooth as something like iMovie, which makes the most of the touch-based interface.
However, we would like to offer up that all of our complaints are purely aesthetic. The app behaves like a champion, offers more than enough content to make it worth the three dollars it costs, and is positively one of the best studio editing apps we have ever seen. As future updates improve upon this, we can only assume now is the best time to get on the Green Screen Movie FX Studio bandwagon.
Green Screen Movie FX Studio requires iOS 6.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
