Facearound: Written iPhone App Review
Over the years we have seen much more than just a few Facebook tie-in applications. These are those sorts of apps that use your Facebook account from your iPhone to expand the functionality of the 800-pound gorilla’s features. However, we have never seen one quite as cool as Facearound (Business Competence). The concept involved is spot-on, and a brilliant example of a genuinely useful “plug-in” for everyone’s favorite social site. For our full review and analysis of Facearound, you need only to check below beyond the break.
Concept and Functionality
Facearound is a unique app in terms of the genre, as it uses the brand-new check-in and geo-tagging functionality introduced to Facebook not that long ago. The app is halfway between Foursquare and Yelp, though with a lot more social media thrown in. Here’s what we mean:
Facearound essentially allows the user to tap directly into the location-specific information tied to Facebook. They can use this data to look for nearby locations of interest, and then invite their friends to go there. All of this is performed directly in-app, and all through Facebook. The beauty of this is that the user can also leave a review directly on the location’s Facebook page, as well as check-in. In addition, because the app uses nearby locations, it literally could not be simpler to find those places in your proximity. You’ll also get information about deals, specials and other such tit-bits not usually found without a bit of digging through Facebook. It’s really quite a nifty concept, and if you’re out and about frequently, it can be a real time saver.
Graphics and Design
In fact, our only real complaint with the app comes in terms of its design. The app itself has been laid out quite well, and we do appreciate the ease with which we could navigate all of its features. However, it’s just not quite as smooth as it could be. It chugs a bit between panes, and takes slightly longer than we’d like to load locational points. Furthermore, there’s just a slightly unrefined feel to the overall user experience that keeps it from being the Foursquare killer it’s begging to be. However, future updates could easily iron these kinks out, unleashing the absolutely unbridled potential of this app for good.
And at the end of the day, Facearound is still an easy recommendation to anyone who uses Facebook, travels about, and has an iPhone. It’s efficient, it’s marvelously useful, and it’s got more potential than one could easily shake a stick at. All in all, this is still the best BookFace tie-in we’ve seen in a long time, and it will still rock your social world.
Facearound requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
