Here at the iPhone App Review, we try to make an habit of mentioning how much we like puzzle games. As such, we’re going to do it once more: We bloody love puzzlers for the iPad. We can never find enough original titles in the genre, which is why we’re mentioning Envelope HD by developer Jerome ZATTONI today. The app comes loaded with incredible levels, a totally unique concept, and more than enough head scratching difficulty to keep us occupied for days to come. If that sounds like something you’ll have an interest in, keep on heading below the break for our full review!

Concept and Gameplay

The developers of Envelope HD informed us that they really tried to come up with an entirely new gaming concept for their puzzler. We’d like to assuage any of their fears now by saying, “Mission accomplished.” The idea behind Envelope HD is like nothing else we have ever seen, and the dedication to this originality is truly awesome.

The gameplay works like this: The app presents you with a job made up of conjoined dots. You are then given a corresponding flattened panel of connected points. It’s now your job to drag these points into place so that the flat plane is warped and bent to match the shape you’re trying to create. It’s really quite simple to pickup and understand, though as the levels progress, you’ll spend more and more time trying to rearrange the dozen different sides of your plane to achieve the shape you need.

In fact, the gameplay is downright difficult towards the end of the app—and we can’t get enough of it. The pacing is pitch perfect so that you’ll have the core concept in minutes, but you’ll easily spend hours unlocking the techniques needed to gain mastery. Brilliant stuff, overall.

Graphics and Design

Did we also mention that Envelope HD is simply gorgeous on the iPad? It’s got a lot of modern web design flair, which as graphic designers, we’re partial too. Still, on a purely gameplay level, the controls could not be simpler to navigate. You really won’t have any trouble at all picking up on how the concept works, and you’ll hardly notice the interface for the fun you’re having. If you do stop to have a look at it, we promise you’ll find the results pleasing to the eye, to say the least.

Overall Value

Overall, Envelope HD is a truly tremendous new addition to the iPad puzzler genre. It’s got a lot of content to offer, a fresh concept we haven’t seen before, and a gorgeous set of graphics to just tie the whole gift off. If you’re a fan of puzzling action on iOS, and are looking for a new app to mess about with, we have no better idea for you than this. Envelope HD is pure puzzling gold.

Envelope HDEnvelope HD requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
