Charge the Zombie: Written iPhone App Review

We’ve mentioned before—much more than just a few times—our absolute adoration for any game that falls within the ever increasing umbrella of “arcade blaster” for the iPhone or iPad. However, we particularly enjoy the castle defense subgenre of this mini-world. There’s just something about beating back hordes of enemies to defend what is ours that gets our blood going. This is one of the many reasons why we like Charge the Zombie, and Charge the Zombie HD for iPad, from Synaptic Wave so much. The app is a brilliant addition to any tower defense gamer’s repertoire, especially considering the asking price. And for our full review, you need only to check below beyond the break!

Concept and Gameplay

The idea behind Charge the Zombie is, quite honestly, nothing new. However, it draws upon all of the classic hallmarks that we’re used to seeing, and does so in a way that is hardly a ripoff of another title. Essentially, the app has you blasting hordes of zombies away from your home as they approach—often at a rather intimidating clip. You’ll be using your tesla ray, which protrudes out the top of your house, to do this.

As you blast wave after wave into submission, you’ll get more money to spend on upgrades. This is where the game truly starts to shine, as the upgrades included are really quite incredible. We loved the specials, of which there are more than a few, while we also dug the multiplicity of levels involved with each and every upgrade. All in all, there’s a lot of stuff to play around with, and a lot of opportunities to involve some really strategy in your gaming.

We also happen to really love the way the game looks. It’s got a light and bouncy cartoon air that reminded us a lot of Plants Vs. Zombies. However, the similarities just about end there. The app’s control scheme is equally as similar, though, having you merely touch the screen once, or tap quickly to a menu, to beat back the enemies. Overall, we liked the aesthetic of the app, and we have no complaints with the interface. In other words, we hardly noticed the windows for the content on the other side—as it should be.

Overall Value

And at the end of the day, Charge the Zombie is an absolutely phenomenal value given the free price tag. You are welcome to make additional purchase in-app for a small fee, though you hardly have to if you’re looking to just enjoy the fun the game is offering. Overall, it’s a great deal, a great game, and a brilliant addition to any iPhone gamer’s repertoire. All of this adds up to a solid recommendation from us.

Charge the ZombieCharge the Zombie requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
