Bubblis HD: Written and Video iPad App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we are extremely fond of puzzle games. We also really enjoy word games. So when the two get together to form a more perfect union, we tend to get a bit frothy at the mouth. This is why we’re so excited to be bringing you a full review of Bubblis HD by developer On Game Creative. The app involves brainy puzzles and spelling, two of our most favorite activities in the whole world. And for our full review, you need only to look a bit further below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
Overall, the idea behind Bubblis HD is really quite good, and rather unique to boot. Essentially, the app asks the player to build up a wall of letters attempting to spell certain words. These words are dictated at various point multiplying levels. To spell one of the words, the player merely drags a falling letter from the top of the screen into place somewhere on the board at the middle. When a word is complete, it explodes, removing several rows of letters to free up the board again.
Each level requires the player to achieve so many row annihilations before being passed onto the next. To meet this requirement, the player really must think hard about where to shove all of the rotating and falling letters. It can be difficult at times, and very frustrating when the same letters keep appearing in excess. In fact, this portion of the game drove us a bit batty. We quickly became frustrated with the seemingly arbitrary letter drops, especially when we received our fifth or sixth “W” in a row: We like a challenge, but we also demand a bit of continuity and sensibility in the way that our puzzles operate.
Graphics and Design
Thankfully, Bubblis HD is a decent looking game. It’s got a series of wonderfully drawn backgrounds, all of which conjure up pleasant arenas within which to play the game. Furthermore, a variety of bombs with unique abilities do quite a bit to spice up the gameplay. We do wish the word choice were a bit more unusual, though we appreciated the series of three difficulties. And lastly, we can’t deny the controls were spot-on: All one needs is a finger and a basic understanding of one (or more) of the app’s 44 available languages. The rest is easy as pie!
Sadly, Bubblis HD is just outside the price range we’d be comfortable with. The app is two dollars, which is exactly one dollar higher than we might like to pay. Still, if you enjoy word games or puzzle games—or both—you’ll still get a kick out of the unique game concept that Bubblis HD is supporting.
Bubblis HD requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
