Concept and Gameplay [Rating: 3/5]

Bonsai Master Studio HD’s concept is to give you a zen environment that you can keep right inside of your iPhone or iPad. You can pick one of eleven classic bonsai trunks and  outfit it with a large selection of leaves, fruits, and accompanying accents. The amount of customizability in this app is great. Every element you add can be changed in size, position, or design. You can then take a snapshot to save your creation in your photos to revisit whenever you desire.

However, upon opening this app, it’s not immediately clear how to use it. You are presented with the default backdrop for creating, and a pull rope in the corner, which upon pulling reveals the menu of different elements available. After some digging through the elements I realized I was lost on how to use the app. The tutorial was hidden inside one of the settings menus, but once discovered, it gave clear instructions on how to use the app. Some of the touch targets are difficult to hit, specifically when placing leaves on trees, or placing “Ground” around the base of the tree, but those elements can easily be cleared from the scene. Most of the other elements can’t be cleared, however, without clearing everything placed.

Design and Graphics [Rating 4/5]

Typically whenever an app uses photographic images inline with a computer generated interface, it looks odd. However, Bonsai Master Studio HD pulls this off near seamlessly. Some images have some pixelation, but the majority are beautiful, clear, and crisp. Excluding a few flaws, this app is very appealing to the eye. The leaves on the trees look natural, the ground covering can’t be placed visually in front of the pot in which the bonsai tree sits; the look of this app is obviously well thought out.

Overall Value [Rating: 4.5/5]

Bonsai Master Studio is a solid app, despite a few flaws. It’s appealing to the eye, easy to use, and plenty creative. It only costs two bucks in the App Store as well, which makes it quite the bargain if you’re looking for a relaxing, creative outlet for escape. With its price where it is, and its potential where it may yet be, Bonsai Master Studio HD is a solid recommendation for anyone in need of a quiet, iPad-infused break.

Bonsai Master Studio HDBonsai Master Studio HD requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.

This is a great app. It relaxes your mind. Beautiful graphics and purpose.
Some minor problems on gameplay should be fixed but generally it worth the 2 bucks.
