SlotCar Mania: Written & Video iPhone App Review
We’re going to go ahead and just be honest about our review of SlotCar Mania HD, by developer feelThere—we really, really love slot car racing. We did a lot of it as children, and as such, the app hits us exactly where it was intended to hit us: Right in the heart. This beautiful recreation of the hobby for the iPad is pitch perfect in almost every way and we could’t be more excited about it. And for our full review (in case you too are pining for some serious slot car action) you need only to race on down below the break.
Concept and Gameplay
As stated before in passing, SlotCar Mania HD is a nearly exact recreation of the age old slot car concept only for your iPad rather than your bedroom floor as a six year old. For those who aren’t familiar with the idea, you essentially are placed in charge of a single car that goes around a track along a predefined route. To beat your opponents you’ll need to step on the gas often, as well as the turbot boost that’s also include. However, if you slam on the turbo too often—and hit a corner wrong—you will quickly find yourself sliding off the track and into oblivion. This loses you time and possibly your position if you’re not careful.
This might sound simplistic, but the developers have done quite a lot to flesh out the gameplay. For instance, the variety of tracks goes a long way toward evening out the repetitiveness. Some of the more complex tracks are murder to navigate. Furthermore, the app also includes up to three-person multiplayer, which adds even more flavor to the bundle. All in all, it’s a perfect recreation of a classic, and we could’t be more ecstatic about it.
Graphics and Design
Best of all, the app looks pretty fantastic on the iPad, as well. Like we’ve already mentioned, the tracks have clearly been thought about quite a bit, and the end result is pitch perfect for the gameplay. Furthermore, you’re free to choose between a variety of stock cars, which adds a bit of personalization. And lastly, the controls are easily learned in seconds. Mastering the concept, however, can take a deliciously long while yet.
In fact, our only real complaint with the app is its price. SlotCar Mania HD clocks in at a solid five dollars in the App Store, which is perhaps just a tad too expensive for what we’d like to pay. That being said, with a wealth of replay value and an endless amount of multiplayer, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth. And if you happen to bloody well enjoy the concept, as we do, then you’ll get that much more out of the app. All in all, despite the price, the app is still an easy recommendation.
SlotCar Mania HD requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
