ReplayerHD: Written iPhone App Review

When it comes to extended function video players for iOS, we sometimes feel like we’ve seen the lot of them. Spurred onward by the lack of official Apple support for, well, just about anything developers have been producing apps to manage your more advanced video needs in spades. And, we’ve just about seen them all. Which enables us to quite confidently announce that ReplayerHD by developer OneMoreTimes is perhaps the best around—at the least, the best at what it does. For our full review, you need only to look below the break.

Concept and Functionality

First out of the bucket, yes ReplayerHD will handle all of those other pesky video formats that Apple failed to include with the last update of iOS. It’ll churn them all out like a champion, which would make the app worthwhile based on its own merit.

However, the fun hardly stops there. You see, ReplayerHD gives you the option to genuinely play with your closed captioning. Have a film with a couple of languages attached? Go ahead and display both CC sets! Put one at the top and the other at the bottom just be dragging them around. Want to make the text bigger? Then simply pinch-to-zoom it. This could not be simpler, but yet we have only seen it here.

You can also repeat sections of the film simply by bookmarking (and optionally naming) the segments you like. Use the handy bookmarks bar to return to these at any point in the future. It’s fast, it’s efficient, and it makes all the sense in the world. The app will even handle lyrics-enabled MP3s, which you can email out to all of your friends and family. Now that is a completely functional video player, and we cannot get enough of it.

Design and Interface

Now, all of this raw functionality does come with a more raw look. That’s not to say that ReplayerHD is unappealing: Very far from it! Rather, it’s just not got the same polished finish as something like our previous favorite Azul Player. Still, there’s plenty of hope for graphical refinements in the future, and all of our complaints are aesthetics only. The app itself behaves and works exactly as we might hope it would. All in all, this makes it a cool runner even with the slight design complaints we have in store.

Overall Value

Best of all, ReplayerHD will cost you exactly nothing in the App Store. Yes, you heard us right. There’s a pro version out there for you to consider, but if you’d like to simply give ReplayerHD a test drive from head to toe, you won’t have to pay a single cent. This is a phenomenal deal, and if you like to have closed captioning with your iOS videos, this is the perfect app for you to spin. Go ahead and load it up: ReplayerHD comes recommended.

ReplayerHDReplayerHD requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
