MotionX GPS Drive: Written and Video iPhone App Review
We travel a lot. And when we say a lot, we really do mean it. Now, what this adds up to is that we’ve used an awful lot of sat-nav units during our days on the road. We’ve tried just about every solution available, especially the multitude of apps hanging about for your smartphone. However, we have never quite seen one as good as MotionX GPS Drive by developer MotionX. The app is simply a phenomenal way to get from Point A to Point B, and to do it with ease and style. And for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Functionality
If you’re reading this, then we’re going to go ahead and assume that you know what a satellite navigation unit is, and that we don’t need to explain that part of the concept. We’re also going to assume that you want to know what sets MotionX apart. So here’s the straight skinny:
MotionX offers the quickest and most responsive interface we have ever seen. It also supplies the best data and the absolute best routes. For instance, it’s as simple as clicking the coffee button on the massive search wheel to perform a quick query for nearby shops. Click the one you want, and MotionX plots the course with verbal and written directions. You can then put the iPhone on your dash and cruise there in style. If you’d like, swap the map view from 3D plus directions to straight 3D, street, or even traffic view for real-time previews of the roads ahead. This latter point is immensely useful for the daily commuter. Want to save a point for future reference? No problem! Log it away as a preferred location. Need to plot out a complex route for a long trip? Want pedestrian travel mapping? How about local speed limits as you come across them? With MotionX, you get all of this and more.
Graphics and Interface
Obviously we could keep going on about the functionality of MotionX for quite some time. However, the interface is also particularly incredible. You see, MotionX isn’t convoluted at all. It’s extremely simple to navigate, especially while on the road. We loved the nav wheel, which enables the user to effortlessly peg the location they’re after. Furthermore, the maps rendered impressively every time. This isn’t always the case with these GPS apps or units, but without incident, we had zero problems getting an accurate, incredibly useful route out of MotionX. If we can say it outright, we have every confidence in MotionX’s ability to map a route, and we’re quite skeptical of these things. All in all, it’s extremely solid design.
Even in terms of pricing, MotionX is a knockout. The app itself will cost you a dollar. With this you’ll get a 30-day free trial, as well as access to all the core features. Beyond this, the app is $2.99 a month, or $9.99 for the year. When compared to a traditional GPS unit, these prices are infinitely better. You could spend hundreds of dollars on a Garmin, or you could opt for this cheap, effective, and endlessly utilitarian application. To us, it’s a real no brainer: Get the MotionX!
MotionX GPS Drive requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
