Mojo Masks: Written iPhone App Review
With Halloween swiftly approaching, we’ve been looking high and low for some of the absolute best seasonal applications to tickle your spooky bone with. Today, we’re quite honored to bring you a full review of the excellent Mojo Masks application by developer Image Metrics. The title is brilliantly simple, endlessly entertaining, and above all, free to use with more content available for in-app purchase. And for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break! Starting with:
Concept and Functionality
Mojo Masks is essentially what we might ordinarily call a novelty application, as its main functionality looks something like this: The user lets the app scan their face, keeping it within the mask guidelines presented on the screen. After a few seconds, Mojo Masks recognizes the users face, and then attaches a spooky mask directly over the video your iPhone’s camera is taking. You can then talk, move about or otherwise act normally, and the iDevice in your hands will track your every move, applying the mask directly and flawlessly.
We cannot overemphasize that last part. If Mojo Masks were only semi-good at what it does, the value it offers would be greatly diminished. However, the app is spotless. It followed our faces effortlessly, and with pitch-perfect results. The masks are much creepier because of their accuracy, and we very much enjoyed posing with spooky expressions, talking animatedly about the coming financial quarter, or doing just about anything else.
Best of all, the app includes a recorder function that lets you either snap a quick photo or take a video. You can then share either to your favorite social networking sites, your SMS buddies, or your eMail account. It’s efficient, it’s unbelievably fun, and it’s social. Need we say more?
Design and Interface
Mojo Masks also happens to look pretty good on both the iPhone and the iPad. The interface is wonderfully touch based, and we had no problems navigating its features. The included masks were quite good as well: We particularly liked the devil eyes, one. Better still, the app includes an absolute mountain of additional content for you to play with should you so desire to spend a few bucks on an in-app purchase. All in all, we have no real complaints with the app, except perhaps that we absolutely hate clowns—the clown mask was greatly under utilized.
At the end of the day, Mojo Masks is just about the best app we can recommend for the Halloween holiday. It’s fun, it’s quick and it requires very little effort on your part. Best of all, it won’t cost you a dime. All in all, this makes it a tremendous value for everyone concerned, and a unique addition to your holiday experience. If we were you, we’d download it now!
Mojo Masks requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
