Manul Puzzle: Written iPhone App Review
Manul Puzzle, developed by ManulApps, is a new and challenging game which is designed to pick your brain. Featuring 31 questions that are harder to answer as you progress, this game is sure to keep you occupied.
Concept and Gameplay:
Unlike other puzzle games in the App Store, Manul Puzzle seeks to put a new twist on how you answer questions. Winning this game doesn’t require launching birds into pigs or dropping sweet confections into hungry monster’s mouth. Instead, your success depends on your ability to research questions and understand clues in order to reach a definite answer.
The goal of the game is simple; answer the question correctly and progress to the next level. If you get stumped, there are hints which will help to give you a general idea of the answer that the question is looking for. If you’re completely baffled and you have absolutely no idea what the question is asking, you can choose to automatically reveal the answer.
Don’t even think about using these hints and answers as crutches, though, because there is a limited number of them. Most of the questions in Manul Puzzle are extremely difficult, and I can almost guarantee you’ll use a hint or an answer at some point in the game.
One of the problems I encountered was an answer I was unable to submit because it was of an error within the game. I knew what the right answer was because the three pictures which were given all matched it, but my answer was rejected. Eventually I ended up using the only “gift” answer provided, just to find out that the answer was misspelled in the game.
I gave Manul Puzzle a low score in this category because misspelled answers can easily ruin gameplay (and they do exist). It’s pretty obvious that there is only one definite answer instead of a variation of possible answers. I ran into the same problem again while trying to answer a question about the Olympics. I know what the answer is and I’ve tried every variation I can think of, but it still won’t let me progress to the next question. If answers are going to be that complicated, the game should at least provide them in a multiple-choice format.
Manul Puzzle has a built-in web browser so you can easily research answers to puzzle questions without having to switch between apps. Trust me, you’ll use the browser to death if you take this game seriously.
Another feature is the in game store. Here you can purchase hint and answer packs. $0.99 will get you three hints or one answer and $1.99 will buy you ten hints or three answers. There is a special offer located at the bottom of the screen where you can purchase ten hints and three answers for $2.99.
If you’re someone who enjoys being challenged to the point where you have a headache, you’ll really enjoy this game. However, there are quite a few kinks which need to be worked out. This game definitely has potential but I just can’t see where it justifies a $0.99 price tag. I would wait for the next update before purchasing it.
Manul Puzzle is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
