myMaya: Written iPhone App Review
Interest in the ancient Mayans has seemingly peaked within recent years due to the looming end of the world in December 2012 that was predicted in their calendar. One app, myMaya is seeking to clear up any confusion about the beliefs of the Mayans by educating the masses about his ancient people group. Developed by Love Production, myMaya is presented as being an app ideal for anyone interested in the Mayan way of life.
This app offers users with three main features: A full calendar, a Mayan horoscope, and a special section dedicated entirely to explaining the true meaning of the December 2012 Mayan prediction. The full calendar is color coded to draw attention to particular days throughout the year. While some of these days might have to deal with suggested planting and harvesting times, others are said to be days that will bring good luck to new endeavors. To help users of myMayan fully enjoy this app and understand the differences between the different calendar days, an “All About Maya” section is also featured on the homepage of the app. The horoscope on myMaya is laid on in typical horoscope fashion; users simply select their day of birth to begin learning about the traditional Mayan superstitions about that day/their beliefs about individuals born on that day. Finally, the last section of myMaya, the “December 21, 2012” section, provides a paragraph-style explanation for the actual Mayan beliefs that surround this day which has been seemingly incorrectly interpreted as representing the end of the world.
Appearance and Layout:
myMaya is laid out in a logical manner, with fun Mayan-style graphics on each main page of the app. Since this app does not offer many features, using it is extremely simple and completely self explanatory. The app itself does not appear to have any major glitches, and each point about the Mayan calendar is explained in a clear cut, easy to understand fashion. However, I did notice that in the “December 21, 2012” section the font seemed to change partway through the explanation, and this little issue was a bit disappointing since it distracted from an otherwise well laid out feature.
Overall, myMaya is an app that will appeal to anyone who is extremely interested in the Mayan belief system. The app provides complete information for all Mayan holidays and special days throughout the year, and this information is presented in an organized manner. Mayan enthusiasts would do well to purchase myMaya, which is currently sold for $0.99.
myMaya iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The iPhone App Review’s rating:
