Hypernova: Written iPhone Game Review
If you’ve read a few of my other reviews, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of games which challenge you to push yourself by rewarding you for high scores. I also love games which take a simple concept (or improve on an older one) and turn it into something completely new and unique.
Hypernova, developed by Twin Halo, puts a new spin on typical chain reaction games. Featuring 100 levels, awesome graphics, and a really cool outer space theme, this game is sure to appeal to almost everyone.
Concept and Gameplay:
If you’re not familiar with how chain reaction games work, the idea is simple. Usually there are objects floating around the screen (in this case, novas) and your goal is to strategically place an initial “detonation”. If you do it correctly you’ll set off the chain which will cause the rest of the objects to detonate. It really is as simple as that.
What’s unique to Hypernova is that there are 10 different novas, each possessing its own characteristic. Some novas create huge explosions when detonated, while others split into smaller novas that shoot out in all different directions. This adds a whole new element of strategy to the game because you also have to think ahead.
What’s really neat about this game is the ability to unlock novas to use as your initial detonator. This means your chances of creating a chain which will clear the board are exponentially increased based on which nova you choose.
Personally I fell in love with this game and couldn’t put it down. The only downside is that it doesn’t take very long to complete all of the levels if you have the “auto advance” feature turned on. However, I can almost guarantee you won’t get a perfect score on every level the first time you try it.
Hypernova is packed with awesome gameplay features and is even highly customizable. For example, you can change the minimum score you need to achieve in order to advance to the next level. This only applies if you have “auto advance” on. This is perfect for players who are looking to earn every achievement by scoring 100% completion on all levels.
Another feature I’m always a fan of is the ability to sync progress across multiple devices. Hypernova is a universal game and supports iCloud saving. Also, the game is compatible with Game Center.
Lastly, Hypernova features awesome background music by SMILETRON. The music fits the game very well, and I found myself turning my phone’s volume all the way up just to listen to it.
I can’t recommend Hypernova enough. There’s nothing to not love about it, and it’s definitely worth $0.99. It’s rare to find a brand-new game that is as refined and beautiful as this one. There is also a free version which allows you to play 40 levels. You’ll be addicted in no time!
Hypernova is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
